Square Enix Cancels Highly-Anticipated Just Cause Mobile Game

Square Enix has announced that its highly-anticipated mobile game, Just Cause Mobile, has been cancelled before its official global release. The game was initially announced at The Game Awards in 2020 and promised a story campaign with co-op missions and competitive multiplayer, featuring a unique movement system that utilized franchise staples like grapple guns, parachutes, and wing suits. The game was developed using Unreal Engine 4 and was billed as a mobile extension of the over-the-top Just Cause series.

The game’s website and Twitter account have been taken offline, and Square Enix has confirmed that the game will no longer be available on digital stores as of July 3, 2023. The cancellation of the game comes after it was made available in regional early access in certain territories, with plans to eventually release it everywhere. However, the game’s development has been repeatedly delayed, leading to an indefinite delay toward the end of last year and the termination of all regional early access programs in February.

In a statement, Square Enix brand lead Anne-Lou Grosbois-Favreau expressed sadness at the end of development for Just Cause Mobile and thanked fans for their support. The brand manager also confirmed that any in-game currency that players might have will be refunded in full.

Just Cause Mobile is not the only mobile game based on a big IP to be cancelled in recent times. Earlier this year, EA shut down Battlefield Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile. The cancellation of Just Cause Mobile is a blow to fans who have been eagerly anticipating the release of the game, especially given the success of the Just Cause franchise, which has seen sequels release in 2010, 2015, and 2018.

The cancellation of Just Cause Mobile comes as a surprise to fans and industry insiders alike, especially given the success of the Just Cause franchise. The series, which debuted in 2006, has become known for its over-the-top action and open-world gameplay, allowing players to explore vast environments and use a variety of weapons and vehicles to wreak havoc.
