What is the BTS light stick called? Why are KPOP Lightsticks so expensive?

Army Bomb (아미밤) is BTS’s official light stick.

What are lightsticks?

K-pop fandoms have invented something much more high-tech to demonstrate their love for their idols: lightsticks.

Looking like a cross between a magical girl anime wand and a souped-up flashlight, these LED sticks are powered by AAA batteries, include Bluetooth capability, and have captured the burning hearts (and wallets) of thousands of adoring fans. Not only do they define the idols’ group identity, they define the community behind them.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a group right now (especially belonging to the “big three” as they’re called — SM, YG, and JYP Entertainment) that doesn’t have a lightstick. Their designs are like miniature works of art, some neutral and elegant, some insanely intricate.

Difference between BTS light stick Versions

Version 1

About two years after the debut of BTS, Big Hit Entertainment announced the release of the group’s fan official lightstick. On March 10, 2015, BTS’s official light stick design was unveiled through the group’s fan café. Having a translucent, rounded shape, this light stick mimics the pattern of a globe describing how the group has taken over the world with growing international popularity. All members also shared photos of them posing with the lighted light stick.

Version 2

On January 2017, a teaser image was revealed of the second version for the Army Bomb. This second version was released on February 10, 2017 and came with Bluetooth to enable color changes during concerts.

Version 3

On July 5, 2018, a teaser image was revealed of the third version for the Army Bomb. This version was released on July 27, 2018 and it has an official app to switch the light stick to concert and manual mode using Bluetooth.

How exactly do fans use lightsticks at concerts?

Waving around a stick of colored light with reckless abandon is fun. But you know what’s even more fun? Color coordination that’s synched to the music via Bluetooth!

Why are KPOP Lightsticks so expensive?

The price tag of K-Pop lightsticks is pretty directly proportional to how much tech is packed in every one.

While older lightsticks mostly had one color and one light function, now the possibilities are endless.

For the BTS ARMY Bomb, there’s an app that pairs to your seat during a concert, and a lighting team at the venue controls which color ocean appears in which sections during certain numbers. On your own though, you can use Bluetooth to connect to your lightstick at any time, and then you can change the colors or strobe the lights to your heart’s desire.

Fans care so deeply about their idols seeing the colored ocean that they’ll go to great lengths to make that happen, with or without the idol company’s support. For example, when SHINee came to Canada in 2017, “the concert organizer did not arrange for any sales of lightsticks, and didn’t confirm that [they wouldn’t sell them] until super late,” Jayu told Mashable.

BTS : The group’s first light stick was released on its fan site in 2015, two years after its debut.

A gray bomb atop a simple black stand, the design is simple and bold. The sphere is thought to symbolize a globe, representing the group’s growing international popularity. In 2017, a second edition of the light stick was released with a more translucent sheen, refined tip, and sleeker stand.
