How to travel with a cat
Tips for traveling with a cat:
• Use a carrier. Get a sturdy, secure carrier for your cat to travel in. They should feel confined but comfortable. Make sure it’s big enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
• Get your cat used to the carrier. Leave the carrier out and open for your cat to explore. Put treats and food inside so they associate it with good things. Give them time to acclimate before the trip.
• Bring familiar items. Include a blanket, bed, or toy that smells like home. This can make your cat feel more secure.
• Use a seatbelt harness. Get a harness and seatbelt attachment so you can securely attach your cat’s carrier to the seat. This prevents the carrier from moving around during travel.
• Bring water and a litterbox. Have a portable litterbox and fresh water for your cat, especially for longer trips. Change the litterbox frequently.
• Bring food. Bring your cat’s regular dry or wet food, especially if traveling for more than a day. Have plenty of food in sealed containers to prevent spills.
• Play music/white noise. Some cats get anxious in the carrier. Playing familiar music or white noise can help keep them calm during travel.
• Avoid sedation if possible. Sedation can be dangerous for cats. Only use sedatives if your vet recommends it and monitors your cat closely.
