SEGA has confirmed its plans to bring “remakes and reboots” of older Sonic the Hedgehog games to contemporary consoles, including PS5 and PS4. In an interview with Famitsu, SEGA President Yukio Sugino confirmed that the company would explore new original ideas while also reviving classic titles. Sugino stated that the company is considering reboots and remakes for Sonic, SEGA’s signature IP, alongside new games like Sonic Superstars.
SEGA has already brought back a number of classic entries in the sidescroller series, courtesy of the recently revamped Sonic Origins compilation, which now includes a bunch of Game Gear titles. However, the company plans to continue to revive classic titles and IPs for contemporary consoles. Sugino also commented on the success of Sonic Frontiers, which has sold more copies than anticipated, and the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, which was released last year.
The company is also considering reboots and remakes for other classic SEGA IPs. Sugino mentioned the upcoming release of Samba de Amigo: Party Central, which is not a reboot but a new entry in the series. However, Sonic Superstars, which was announced recently, will have elements of a reboot while still being a new entry in the series. Sugino emphasized that while the company plans to develop new games, it is also considering reboots and remakes for appropriate IPs.
