Revealed in March 2003, it was released on the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and Microsoft Windows in November 2003. The Sands of Time is a reboot of the Prince of Persia series, created by Jordan Mechner. Mechner served as creative consultant, designer, and scenario writer for The Sands of Time.
The game follows an unnamed Prince whose father sacks an ancient city at the instigation of a traitorous Vizier. During the attack, the Prince obtains an artifact called the Dagger of Time, while his father’s army captures an hourglass containing the mysterious Sands of Time. Visiting the palace of the Sultan of Azad to present the Sands as a gift, the Vizier tricks the Prince into releasing the Sands, transforming the people of Azad into savage monsters under his control. Together with Farah, a young Princess who knows the power of the Sands, the Prince works to correct his mistake and foil the Vizier’s evil plans. The gameplay revolves around the Prince’s platforming abilities, broken up by fights with the creatures created by the Sands. The hero of the game, the so-called Prince, stumbles into a small canyon in the middle of an uncharted desert. There, he meets Princess Elika, apparently the Number One Worshipper of Ormazd, and therefore a big antagonist of Ahriman. During the game’s tutorial scenes, check the on-screen prompts. The Prince should follow Elika through the canyon. Now is as good a time as any to become familiar with the various moves, such as wall running, wall jumping, and grip falling. For the combat, the heroes win if they reduce the enemies’ life to zero.
Eventually, the heroes will reach the hub-like desert area, where a big ancient temple stands. The Prince should follow Elika across the sands to the temple. Climb up the wall via the ledges, turn the crank once by 90 degrees to open the temple’s main gate, drop back down along the same wall with the ledges, and enter the long hallway. At the other end of this long hallway, hang together onto the wall ring switch to open the door to the Tree of Life’s chamber.
Approach the Tree of Life. Fight the bad guy in black, and then fight the minor demon bad guy, learning about Elika’s team attacks in the process. Afterward, escape from the temple by backing out. Jump across the pits in the ground, and wall run where needed. Go up the ramps to the door on the high platform, beat off a second minor bad guy, and then use the wall ring switch to open the door again. Back in the long hallway, which is also crumbling apart, wall run and wall jump to skip over the collapsing sections. As the Prince approaches the main gate, he will need to jump and then perform a cooperative jump, where Elika boosts him forward.
