SM Entertainment has launched a new female supergroup called Girls On Top, made up of members from the agency’s roster.
The new band is the sixth project group to be formed in the label’s history, an endeavour that began with SM The Ballad in 2010. That group featured members of TVXQ, Girls’ Generation and EXO.

Girls On Top was announced December 26 and features soloist BoA, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Hyoyeon, Red Velvet’s Seulgi and Wendy, and aespa’s Winter and Karina.

Girls On Top shares a name with BoA’s 2005 single and album of the same name. Active since 2000, the now 35-year-old singer is considered one of the leading icons of K-pop.
Girls’ Generation, meanwhile, was formed in 2007, and became known as one of the biggest names in K-pop in the years that followed, with viral hits like Gee in 2009 and I Got A Boy in 2013 shaping the music industry’s growth.
Red Velvet, active since 2014, and Aespa, who made their debut in 2020, are the newest SM Entertainment girl groups, but both have had hits and have heavily influenced the music industry’s direction. This year, Aespa solidified their place in K-pop history with the release of their experimental, but addictive, hit singles Next Level and Savage.
Most of SM Entertainment’s biggest K-pop female acts since 2000 are represented in Girls On Top’s line-up, although there is no one from f(X), who launched in 2009 but are currently inactive.
This is the second supergroup SM Entertainment has launched in recent years following the 2019 unveiling of SuperM. The boy band, which released the album Super One last year, has seven members: Taemin of Shinee, Baekhyun and Kai of Exo and Taeyong, Mark, Ten and Lucas of NCT and its associated subgroups (NCT 127, NCT Dream and WayV.

What is Girls on Top Album?
Girls on Top is the fifth Korean studio album by South Korean singer BoA, released on June 24, 2005 by her native label SM Entertainment.
Under the repackaged title Moto, the album was re-released on August 25, 2005 to promote the titular track, while including a previous unreleased track, and later on March 26, 2008 in Japan as a special edition (along with her previous Korean release My Name).
Peaking at number three on the monthly domestic Music Industry Association of Korea ranking list, Girls on Top was a commercial success, having sold a total of 115,000 copies in 2005.
It was, at the time, the singer’s last release in her native country for over five years, until the release of Hurricane Venus in August 2010.
To promote the album, “Girls on Top” and “Moto” were released as singles from the album. Similar to her previous Korean release, the album also received an oversea version, including a Mandarin version of the eponymous lead single, “Girls on Top”.
An English version of the title track is on BoA’s debut English studio album, BoA (2009).
