Mayflower beach drowning
On July 28, 2023, three swimmers were pulled from the water at Mayflower Beach in Dennis, Massachusetts, according to multiple news sources. The incident occurred around 3 p.m., when Dennis Beach Department staff alerted the police that a possible drowning victim had been pulled from the water. When first responders arrived, three female swimmers were found to be in various stages of medical distress.
According to a report by NBC Boston, all three swimmers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment. The report states that one of the swimmers was unconscious and two others were conscious but in need of lifesaving treatment. The report did not provide further information on their conditions.
Another report by MassLive.com states that the three women were ages 45, 15, and 11. The report states that the 11-year-old waved for help from the water, and three lifeguards with two rescue boards immediately went into the water and loaded all three women onto the boards, bringing them back to shore. Two of the women needed immediate lifesaving treatment, which was started by Dennis Beach Department staff members and aided by civilian medical professionals and others on the beach who came forward to help.
A report by Boston.com also confirms that all three women were taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment. The report quotes a nurse who was on the beach at the time and helped get one of the victims to shore and administer first aid. The nurse stated that one of the victims had a pulse but did not have much of a response at the time.
Both the MassLive.com and Boston.com reports note that Mayflower Beach reportedly had strong offshore winds and higher than normal surf conditions on the day of the incident.
The reports suggest that the incident at Mayflower Beach was a near-drowning, as the individuals were rescued and received medical treatment, but they do not confirm whether any of the individuals ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
