Entertainment Tonight confirmed that Olivia will return in season 3 in a “recurring role” and feature far less in the show than in previous seasons.
The news comes after Olivia told the Guardian in 2021 that she was “committed to HSM for two more years” but wanted to now “focus on music”.
She added: “I think it’s really hard to split time between the two.”
Speaking with Hollywood Life previously about Olivia’s future in the show, HSMTMTS showrunner Tim Federle said: “Look, I have so much respect for Olivia as a songwriter and as a human and what her own dreams are. I love High School Musical with Olivia. Olivia is a massive part of our success but season 3 is TBD in terms of where Nini’s journey would go.”
According to the official cast list released by Disney+, Olivia Rodrigo will be in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3 as a guest star. She’ll reprisal her role as Nini.
So far there’s be no official word on Rodrigo bowing out from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Back in May she told The Guardian that she still had two more years left on her contract with the show.
However, given the success of her debut album and Rodrigo’s own desire to focus primarily on her music, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise if Nini becomes more of a recurring character.
The new season will be set at a summer camp and feature songs from Frozen and Camp Rock. With Nini taking on a smaller role, it’s possible that she won’t go to the summer camp. The season 2 finale hinted that she might record music with Gina’s producer brother Jamie.
Set at East High School, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” introduces members of the drama club and their faculty advisers as they work their way toward the opening night of the musicals that they produce.
New romances blossom, old friendships are tested to their limits while new ones are formed, rivalries flare, and lives are changed forever as these students discover the transformative power that only high school theater can provide.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Role in “HSMTMTS” Season 3 Is Getting a Major Change
Olivia Rodrigo is one busy bee.
Not only is the star a fixture on red carpets, but she’s also gearing up for the release of her very own Disney+ documentary and the highly-anticipated third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series — which we just learned will introduce a major change for her character.
As noted by ET Online, Olivia’s role as Nini in HSM:TM:TS has gone from regular to recurring, meaning she probably won’t be as involved in the series this season. Back in December 2021, it was officially confirmed that Olivia was to reprise her role for season three after much speculation about her return.
Season 3 of HSM:TM:TS, which began filming in January, takes place at Camp Shallow Lake in California, a move many theorized could have been made to fit around Olivia’s schedule. (Previous seasons were recorded in Salt Lake City.) At the summer camp, we’ll see some Wildcats summer hijinks while they plan a thespian production of Frozen.
