Sam Smith and Kim Petras have just made music history and become the first openly trans artists to go Number 1 in the US.

It was a huge achievement for both artists – Unholy marks the first number one single in the US and the UK by a trans woman and a non binary artist in history (Unholy just celebrated its fourth week at number one in Britain). We’ve all known Sam Smith for years, but if you haven’t got your ear to the ground in the pop scene Kim Petras might have passed you by.

If you’ve opened TikTok in the last two months, you will almost definitely have heard the bold and raunchy chorus of Unholy, the smash hit from Sam Smith and Kim Petras. The song’s addictive chorus was buzzing around social media for weeks and fans were anticipating the song’s official release.

Who is Kim Petras?

Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. Between 2016 and 2020, she released music as an independent artist under her own imprint, BunHead Records, before signing with Amigo and Republic Records in 2021.
