Ghostwire: Tokyo Review, What is the story? It the game cancelled?

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game released worldwide on March 25, 2022 as a one-year timed exclusive for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 5.

What is the story of Ghostwire: Tokyo?

Ghostwire: Tokyo is an action-adventure game played from a first-person perspective. The player can use various psychic and paranormal abilities to defeat the ghosts and spirits haunting Tokyo. Combat director Shinichiro Hara described the combat as “karate meets magic”, as the player character utilizes hand movements inspired by Kuji-kiri hand gestures to cast spells. When an enemy loses most of their health, its core is exposed and the player can use takedown moves to destroy it. By defeating these spirits and collecting Yokai, the character will collect spirit points and resources used to upgrade their abilities.

In an instant, nearly all of Tokyo’s population vanishes and paranormal Visitors from another world take their place in the streets. As Akito, one of the city’s last living humans, you must join forces with a spirit named KK to put an end to the supernatural threat encroaching on Tokyo.

Is Ghostwire: Tokyo Cancelled?

Despite never being officially cancelled by Bethesda, a lot of people feared the worst for Ghostwire Tokyo after the game’s creative director suddenly left the company just a few months after its announcement. Ikumi Nakamura was the one to grab the headlines at E3 2019 when her adorable presentation of the title turned a lot of heads, but it doesn’t sound like production of the title has been affected too much by her departure.

In the latest episode of We Have Cool Friends from Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda’s Pete Hines joins Greg Miller to discuss a list of topics. Ghostwire Tokyo happened to be one of them, stating: “On both Deathloop and GhostWire, I’m really excited for you to see the game itself. Uhm… I won’t say anything now, but it does have an interesting parallel to DOOM Eternal that I’ll talk to you about once we show GhostWire that I’m curious if you picked up or noticed… After you see it, I’ll explain a little bit about it. I’m sure we’ll talk a little bit about where the connective tissue is between those two things.”

We’re interested to learn more of what Hines means when he mentions parallels between the Tango Gameworks developed title and the trip to hell we’ll be taking to hell in exactly two weeks time, but for now, we’re just happy to be safe in the fact that the game still exists. At this point in the generation, we have to assume that it is at least a cross-gen title with a native PlayStation 5 version in the works.

How To Beat Yaseotoko in Ghostwire: Tokyo?

Akito will be transported to a wide arena in an alternate dimension when facing Yaseotoko. Here you’ll have plenty of space to deal with this terrifying beast, apart from multiple Crystallized Ethers around, which will recover your SP when broken.

When the battle begins, you can use your Spectral Vision and see that the enemy’s core is in his chest. That’s where you want to throw most of your attacks. However, at the same time, you’ll have to avoid everything that the boss will throw at you.

His fire lances and air projectiles can be avoided by just running to the side, but their timing can be tricky, so always have your block at hand just in case. Defending against his Water Weaving is another story, as Yaseotoko will come near you to deal damage with a wave. Sometimes this move can be completely avoided by just crouching at the precise time, but it’s better if you just guard yourself, trying to parry it.

How To Beat Hannya in Ghostwire: Tokyo?

For the last battle, you will be in a wide arena, similar to the one of Yaseotoko’s fight. Once again, there’s enough space to move freely, avoid attacks, and prepare your own Weavings.

Hannya has three cores which you can see right from the beginning: they are the three masks representing himself, his daughter, and his wife. To win the battle, you need to break every core before dying. There’s no use in using Spectral Vision during this battle. You won’t need it for anything in particular as the cores will always be visible.

Everything you have learned during previous boss fights will be needed here. Water attacks are harder to parry or Perfect Block, so it will be wise to just guard and look for counterattack windows.

On the other hand, air projectiles are easier to parry, but they still have a weird timing a homing property. If you don’t think you can parry and negate the damage, it’ll be better to just run to the sides. This same strategy applies to the tornadoes and his fire attacks, though you shouldn’t try to Perfect Block the firebombs because the explosion radius will still damage you.

Quite different from other bosses and enemies in Ghostwire: Tokyo PS5, Hannya’s faces won’t heal over time. All the damage you make to them will be permanent, and you can hurt them all before actually breaking one.

The rest of the attacks are pretty standard. Just move to the side and you’ll be fine. The most annoying one is the jump because it will make it harder for you to shoot the masks. That is the thing that will most likely make the battle last: attacking the cores, since he’s constantly moving from one side to the other and not always showing the masks.

IS GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO PS5 EXCLUSIVE ?

For now, Ghostwire: Tokyo has been announced as a timed PS5 console exclusive. This deal is being honored despite Microsoft acquiring ZeniMax Media, meaning that Bethesda Softworks is now part of the Xbox first-party group. It’ll only be available on PS5 and PC for a limited time before being launched on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at a later date.

With this in mind, Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has stated that in the future, Bethesda games will be exclusive to platforms with Xbox Game Pass.

WHEN IS GHOSTWIRE: TOKYO’S RELEASE DATE ?

Ghostwire: Tokyo arrived on March 25, 2022. It was originally scheduled to arrive on PS5 and PC at some point in 2021, as disclaimer text in a CES 2021 showcase video indicated that this game is releasing in October 2021, but this has since been pulled. Due to the lingering effects of the pandemic, the game was delayed to early 2022 to ensure the health and safety of the developers while polishing the game as much as possible.

As it’s a one-year timed Ghostwire: Tokyo console exclusive, it’ll come to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S sometime later in 2023, presumably an exact year after its launch on PS5 and PC.
