Cyberpunk 2077 Review: How The Character Builds Work? Should You Play It?

CD Projekt announced the return of Cyberpunk 2077 to the Playstation Store. The game is available for purchase and backwards compatible!

Following the disastrous launch on consoles and unbelievably bad performance Sony kicked Cyberpunk 2077 Romance out of the Playstation store.

The official statement was that the company cannot tolerate such a bad game and promote it to their customers. Why other atrocities that dare to call themselves video games continue to be available on their store, is a different topic, for a different time and place perhaps.

Cyberpunk 2077 review

Cyberpunk 2077 is a paragon of open-world gaming, offering the kind of freedom to explore and define your character that provides a new pinnacle for the genre. It takes everything we celebrate about open-world games, and learns from it, implementing best-in-class variations in a world that’s so dense and detailed. Add in the human-like level of reactivity and emotional depth that it brings to its narrative, and it all combines for the most spectacular experience. Take a trip to Night City immediately.

The total play time in Cyberpunk 2077 mods depends on whether you will do other activities or focus solely on the main story. Players who focus only on the main missions will watch the credits after about 20 hours. However, Cyberpunk 2077 has a few endings – if you want to watch them all, you will have to complete other main quests. This will extend the play time to about 35-40 hours. It is worth noting that the main plot of Cyberpunk 2077 is shorter than that of The Witcher 3. However, the story is less linear. The game also encourages players to have multiple playthroughs.

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in a huge metropolis surrounded by wastelands. If you explore the world map and deal with side quests, gigs, and help the Night City police, you should be able to spend over 100 hours with the game.

In Cyberpunk 2077, the quests are divided into main and side ones. You need to complete main story missions to finish the game, while side quests are completely optional.

Cyberpunk 2077 Character Builds: How Do They Work?

Before we get into the builds themselves, let’s quickly go over the makeup of an effective character build. Generally speaking, an effective character build focuses on specific areas of expertise. By making the most of these areas and ignoring others, you create your own style of play.

In Cyberpunk 2077, most character builds should focus on just two or three key Skills. That may sound limiting, but the game actually gives you a lot of freedom when it comes developing your character. You can combine any Skills that you want, and there’s a lot of room for experimentation.

Please Note: Following the release of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5, alongside update 1.5, the game’s skill system has been reworked. While no major changes have been made to the way that the system functions overall, numerous perks have been altered on a mechanical level, and some have been renamed or replaced entirely.

This character build guide now takes these changes into account, and should be up to date as a result. We will, of course, update this guide should CD Projekt Red make additional changes down the line.

There are five Attributes in Cyberpunk 2077:

At the beginning of the game, when you first create your character, you’re given a number of Attribute points to spend however you like. At this stage, the minimum for any Attribute is 3 points. The maximum is 6 points.

Once you’re in the game proper, you’ll gain an additional Attribute point every time you level up. The maximum level in Cyberpunk 2077 is 50, so over the course of the game, you get 50 Attribute points to work with, on top of the points that you start off with.

Should You Play Cyberpunk 2077 Now?

The honest answer to the question is – it depends. If you want to experience a well-realized world with unique characters and a decent story, and have a powerful PC to play on, then go for it. For everyone else, we can’t recommend the game. The game’s console performance is still not great, but if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S console, then sure, take it for a spin. While CDPR keeps promising that fixes for the game are coming, we can only judge the game as it plays right now, which is just fine. For those of you who haven’t played the game and are interested in it, we would recommend picking it up during a good sale if you really want to try it. For everyone else, waiting a few months more to pick up the “complete edition” or its equivalent when the game is finally fixed is the more reasonable option.

Cyberpunk 2077 PC Performance – Has It Improved?

We played the game at launch on our PC, which has an AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT CPU, Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 Super GPU paired with 32 GB of DDR4 RAM. Suffice to say, our PC was well above what CDPR recommends PC players to have, but the game’s performance seemed to say otherwise. Be it the game’s extremely high technical ambitions, or its lack of optimisation, the game didn’t, and still doesn’t run as well as it probably should. At launch, we played the game with Digital Foundry’s optimised settings for PC, and averaged around 50-60fps.

When we picked up Cyberpunk 2077 again for testing this month, we was a little disappointed with performance as it hasn’t improved too much. For testing, we drove from the starting apartment to Little China and then strolled around the market. The location was chosen as it includes a high number of NPCs and particle effects all around the market, and challenges the game’s asset streaming as you move towards it from a relatively open area outside it.

Is it good to play Cyberpunk 2077?

It features some incredible stories, both in the main campaign and the numerous sidequests, and some deeply fascinating lore to boot. Even if the gameplay is pretty rote, the writing is almost always excellent. Just be aware that mechanically, Cyberpunk 2077 is a mindless FPS action game, and should be played like one.
