What is Teamfight Tactics?
Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is an auto battler game developed and published by Riot Games. The game is a spinoff of League of Legends and is based on Dota Auto Chess, where players compete online against seven other opponents by building a team to be the last one standing. There are also multiple modes of the game which include: Normal, Ranked, HyperRoll and the most recent release, Double Up.
While most of these modes are against seven other opponents, Double Up is a special game mode where players have a partner and the team plays against six other players who make up the three other teams. The game released as a League of Legends game mode for Microsoft Windows and macOS in June 2019 and as a standalone game for Android and iOS in March 2020, featuring cross-platform play between them.

How do you win in Teamfight Tactics?
The ultimate goal of TFT is to be the last player standing in an 8-player free for all match. You spend the game accumulating resources like gold and items and making decisions to build a team of units with different strengths, weaknesses, and abilities.
If you compose your team with units that synergize, they will be empowered with buffed properties. Your team of units will fight against the teams of the other players at random during the rounds. The player whose team loses will take damage. When a player runs out of life, they are out. This may seem hard but getting top 3 counts as a win, so aim for that.
These are the very surface level basics of TFT. Let’s get started with walking through how to play a match.
What is the Carousel in Teamfight tactics?
Upon entering the game and every six subsequent rounds, all players will enter the Carousel. This is a special round where you will get to choose a champion and accompanying item without fighting your opponents.
Players begin the Carousel locked into their platforms, and will be released in pairs, according to their current Player Health. Players with less Health will be released faster, allowing them a better selection of champions and items.
In the first Carousel, all players are released at the same time
The Carousel will rotate around, and to claim a champion a player must first run their avatar through it. This can be hard to time especially if the Carousel is moving away from you, and many players will often compete over the same champions, so be prepared to have a back up option!
How do Items work in Teamfight Tactics?
Items are an extremely important aspect of TFT and aside from levelling, are the primary to increase the power of your champions. They work by combining two item components into a full item. Once combined, only certain niche methods can disassemble an item, so be sure to build exactly what items you want, rather than randomly combining for power. Items can only be combined by placing them onto a champion, and can only be removed via a Magnetic Remover, a Reforger, or if that champion is sold.
Champions, Shop, and Probabilities in Teamfight Tactics
In order to prepare for the PVP rounds, we will need to create a team of champions. Since TFT is referred to as an autobattler or autochess, you can think of champions like a chess piece.
Every champion has their own set of traits and origins, offensive and defensive stats, and their own unique spell. Champions cast their spell when they reach full mana. This amount of mana needed to cast is different for each champion, but every champion gains mana on every basic attack and when they take damage.
In order to get champions, you will need to buy Champions from the shop, which will show you 5 champions at a time. Champions will cost anywhere from 1 to 5 gold with the exception of Teemo who costs 6 health instead because of his Traits–more on Traits later. Much like in real life, the higher the cost, the rarer and usually more powerful the champion is.
Now if you don’t like what you see in your shop of Teamfight tactics, there is an option to refresh the shop, which is also called rolling–kind of like rolling a dice. This costs two gold. This will give you a new set of 5 champions. Now you might be wondering how to get specific champions. Teamfight Tactics has a shared pool of champions, which means there is a finite amount of each champion in the game. As you level up in the game, you will also increase the chance to see more powerful champions in your shop. You can check out the exact number of champions and the chance to hit them for each level by checking out this cheat sheet.
Like League of Legends, TFT is free. And it’s built right into the main League of Legends client, which you can grab here if you don’t already have it. Once you have the launcher installed and have registered an account, the play button will let you select Teamfight Tactics as the game mode.
Summary. TeamFight Tactics can be difficult for a beginner to understand. The game has different elements, variations and combinations that can take time to get your head around.

Of course, if you want to spend money and get the Galaxies Pass+, you can and you’ll unlock even more prizes, but, again, those don’t impact the actual gameplay. No pay-to-win here.
