Call of Duty 2022: Modern Warfare 2 is fast approaching and we’ve got a full look at all there is to know. From a release date to upcoming game modes and even campaign details, here’s a rundown of every early detail.
Will there be a Modern Warfare 2? Where is the Release Date?
This early on, we obviously don’t have any information about the release date of CoD 2022, but we already have a presumed date for the official reveal of the title. According to leaks on Twitter, MWII will be officially revealed on May 30, 2022. However, we can only speculate about the final release date so far. Modern Warfare 2019 was released on October 25, Black Ops Cold War on November 13 and Vanguard on November 5. According to those dates, it would be a big surprise if Modern Warfare II wouldn’t release somewhere between the end of October and the beginning of November. That would at least be the normal release period for a new CoD. However, since Vanguard is currently selling worse than expected, leaker Tom Henderson believes that MWII 2022 could possibly be released earlier.
According to Henderson, MWII could be released earlier in October, followed by a big Warzone update. What is true about this assumption is still unclear, but since the new CoD has been in development for much longer than the previous CoDs and is far ahead of schedule, an earlier release is not completely out of the question.
Even though we don’t have an exact release date yet, there is already first information about the official reveal of Modern Warfare II. According to Ralph, the official reveal of the game will take place on April 30, 2022.
That would be much earlier than in the last few years, but we only expect a very small teaser at the end of April. A real reveal with a trailer and gameplay scenes will probably only be released later and will most likely be linked to an event in Warzone.
This MODERN WARFARE 2 MULTIPLAYER Leak Shows Us the (Re)Master Plan…
We’re nearly to that point of the year when Modern Warfare II / Modern Warfare 2 may actually be revealed to us, giving us accurate information on campaign details, maybe now Multiplayer just yet, but confirming some of our suspicions about the upcoming Modern Warfare II title. As it stands, we currently have a bit of information from insiders in relation to some of the coming multiplayer content in Modern Warfare II.
If you remember, it’s rumored that Call of Duty 2023 is delayed until 2024 to give Treyarch another year to work on their upcoming project, which then leaves Modern Warfare II / Modern Warfare 2 by Infinity Ward to tide players over for a whole 2 years. That’s uncharted territory for Call of Duty, being it will be the first year in two decades to not have a premium game launch. So, what happens in that additional 12 months? That’s what we’re discussing today thanks to some information from RalphsValve, gaming insider who’s given us a lot of the scoop so far in regards to Modern Warfare II / Modern Warfare 2. Today we’re breaking down this Modern Warfare II Leak that gives us the (Re)Master Plan for the content year(s) ahead.
Call of Duty 2022: Modern Warfare 2 platforms
Modern Warfare 2 is expected to arrive on both last-gen and current-gen hardware. No specific platforms have been announced for Modern Warfare 2 just yet. Though similar to the release date, this is another trend we can expect to see continue in 2022.
Both Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard are cross-gen Call of Duty titles. They both released across last-gen and current-gen gaming hardware. As a result, we can expect to see Modern Warfare 2 follow suit.
Modern Warfare 2 will likely be coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, along with PC. However, it is worth noting that previous-gen versions may come with one distinction. Leakers have implied Modern Warfare 2 could ship on multiple discs for the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
With Microsoft acquiring Activision-Blizzard, though, there’s a chance that while Modern Warfare 2 will come to PlayStation hardware, that could change in the future.
“Activision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward,” Phil Spencer said in an Xbox blog post.
Moreover, prominent Call of Duty insider Tom Henderson has suggested this may be the last title supported on previous generation consoles.
Modern Warfare 2 Warzone integration
Industry insiders have suggested that Modern Warfare 2 will come with a major update to Warzone. However, it was also confirmed recently that Infinity Ward is currently developing Warzone 2 alongside its next main game.
The sequel to the CoD battle royale is expected to drop sometime in 2023, most likely to give players something to sink their teeth into while devs focus on 2024’s release.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 story and setting
Allegedly codenamed internally as Project Cortez, the game will feature a single-player campaign that’s rumoured to take place during the American-led War on Drugs in South America.
According to further reporting by Tom Henderson, the game will be even grittier than Modern Warfare 2019, which already leant further into realism than Call of Duty has for a while, with missions like Clean House featuring realistic room clearances and night vision.
Infinity Ward has been working on the game since it released Modern Warfare, giving it a healthy three-year cycle during which to innovate, and the campaign will accordingly see some nice additions like narrative choices (hopefully more in-depth than the “choose whether to torture a prisoner” options we’ve got before) and guns that might sometimes jam to really put you up the creek without a paddle.
The story should see Captain Price’s Task Force 141 taking the fight to Colombia’s cartels in undercover missions that won’t be as militarised, instead focussing on stealth and incisiveness.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gameplay
There will obviously be a significant amount of continuity from the last Modern Warfare when it comes to gameplay for the next game from Infinity Ward, but that still leaves room for some improvements and additions.
We still expect it to feature a low time-to-kill, making it fairly hardcore as shooters go, but will be interested to see if it embraces some of the technical advances made by Vanguard in the meantime.
For example, the WW2 shooter features much more destructibility in maps and environments, as well as an expanded weapon mounting system that lets you move around more while still getting weapon control bonuses.
Call of Duty 2022 game modes
Tom Henderson claims that Modern Warfare 2 will come with a brand-new game mode – DMZ. While we don’t know exactly what the game mode will entail, the leaker described this mode as “MWII’s take on Escape From Tarkov.”
Henderson believes the mode will have been in development for over four years by the time Modern Warfare 2 releases, and you’ll drop into several locations and will have to plunder through abandoned homes, buildings, vehicles, crates, and corpses. He also said that the area has been made up of maps from the original MW2 which act as POIs, and should also act as the new Warzone map.
From this description, it seems that DMZ will be one of the most grounded game modes in the upcoming title. Hopefully, it will make for an intense experience for Call of Duty 2022 players.
Attackers v. Defenders
Leaker RalphsValve has also claimed that MW2 will feature a Rainbow Six Siege-inspired mode called Attackers v. Defenders. However, leakers such as Tom Henderson have disputed the claim.
This mode will see players attack and defend objective sites while utilizing “hidden locations, booby traps and cameras.”
Attackers v. Defenders would have a revamped health system, and players are able to assign each of their squad members separate roles such as “Squad Leader.”
However, prominent CoD leakers TheMW2Ghost and Tom Henderson claim their sources say “it was a scrapped mode from MW19 and they haven’t heard or seen anything regarding it coming to MW II.”
These two modes are only leaks or rumors at this point, so have yet to be confirmed. We’ll be sure to update this article as soon as we learn some more official information about Modern Warfare 2’s game modes.
