Many variations of poker exist, but all of them share certain basic rules. Each game involves betting on the strength of your poker hand, and all games feature a ‘pot’ that those bets go into. The player with the strongest hand, or the only player left in the pot after everyone else folds, wins the pot.
All poker games also feature a mandatory bet of some kind. In Hold’em games, this is usually called a ‘blind’ and is wagered when it’s one or more players’ turn to post the blinds. In Stud and Draw poker games, this is usually called an ‘ante’ and is wagered every hand, while some games have antes in addition to blinds.
Poker Online games
All Poker Online games feature one or more betting rounds in which the player can make one of the following betting choices:
- Check – To not bet, with the option to call or raise later in the betting round
- Bet – To put chips into the pot
- Fold – To release, or ‘muck’, your hand and forfeit any chance of winning the current pot
- Call – To put into the pot an amount of chips equal to the most recent bet or raise
- Raise – To increase the amount of the current bet

Thus poker games vary in deck configuration, the number of cards in play, the number dealt face up or face down, and the number shared by all players, but all have rules that involve one or more rounds of betting.

Popular Poker Games to Learn and Play
Below are a few of the most popular versions of poker that you may encounter at your weekly dealer’s-choice poker game. If you don’t know these, you’ll be at a disadvantage when something wild (like FOLLOW THE QUEEN!) is called.
In “stud” games, players are dealt a number of cards (typically 5 or 7) and must use those original cards to make their best hand.
Texas Hold’em
Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game in the world. If you want to learn to play online poker games, this is a great place to start.
This is especially true because most of the marquee tournaments worldwide (WSOP, WPT, EPT, etc.) use this variation.
In a poker game of Texas hold’em, the dealer will shuffle a standard 52-card deck (but will not play in casinos and card rooms).
Omaha
If you’ve learned the Texas hold’em poker rules, buckle your seatbelt. Omaha could be the best poker game for you if you’re ready for some bigger swings.
In Omaha poker, players receive four hole cards instead of two and can only use two cards from their hand.
Seven-card stud
This is the hipster poker game for those not playing along. This is the game that was popular before Texas hold’em exploded.
So take a second before you look into the top sites that offer online poker for real money, learn how to play seven-card stud and use our strategy articles to win big.
Played with two to eight players and without a flop and community cards, 7-card stud is a poker game that starts with two cards face down and a third face up (the hole cards and the door card).
2-7 Triple Draw
Once you feel you’ve tackled the world’s best online poker sites, or you’re just ready for some advanced poker games, 2-7 Triple Draw will be waiting for you with inverse hand rankings and all.
The goal of a poker game like 2-7 Triple Draw is to make the lowest possible five-card hand as possible in a four-round betting game with three draws a game.
Each round, players choose cards to discard anywhere from zero to five cards, and the dealer will give out replacement cards.
Open-Faced Chinese Poker (OFC Poker)
There’s a special rule in Chinese poker called “Fantasyland.” Need we say more?
Well, I guess we do if you want to beast this new and exciting form of poker.
This newer poker game, open-faced Chinese poker (OFC Poker), was invented in 2011 and evolved from closed-face, “regular” Chinese poker.
Chinese poker has players drawing cards from a single deck while trying to make the best hand possible.
List of poker hands
In poker, players form sets of five playing cards, called hands, according to the rules of the game.
Each hand has a rank, which is compared against the ranks of other hands participating in the showdown to decide who wins the pot.
In high games, like Texas hold ’em and seven-card stud, the highest-ranking hands win. In low games, like razz, the lowest-ranking hands win. In high-low split games, both the highest-ranking and lowest-ranking hands win, though different rules are used to rank the high and low hands.

Poker is a simple game to learn, but the poker rules can be challenging for a complete beginner.
Like all gambling games, luck does play a major role in poker, especially in the short term. Poker is different than any other form of gambling, however. Unlike the other games on a casino floor, poker is a game of skill, and the world’s top pros make money because they’re the best players in the game.
In no limit hold ’em, all you need is basic probability and gambling math, such as pot odds, implied odds, expected value, and combinatorics. Anything beyond that is mostly for poker researchers who develop tools that players use to improve.
Currently the only legal markets are in Nevada, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan. Online poker went live in Michigan on January 29, 2021. West Virginia has passed legislation authorizing online poker.
