Mario Strikers: Battle League was announced for Switch during a Nintendo Direct earlier this year, but we haven’t heard much about the game since. However, Nintendo has just come out with a new five-minute trailer that provides a look at the upcoming Switch title.
Mario Strikers: Battle League gets brand new trailer
In case you missed our previous coverage, here’s some information about Mario Strikers: Battle League:
Introducing Strike, a 5-on-5, soccer-like sport with no rules—do whatever it takes to win! Get gritty and try to score the most goals by tackling enemies, using items, and pulling off score-boosting Hyper Strikes. Super Mario series mainstays like Peach, Toad, and Yoshi put their cleats (and stats) to the pitch and will stop at nothing to score. Customize your characters with gear that can augment their stats and appearance. Take the carnage online or pass the ball to players locally – just look out for the electric fence.
Join an online club to push and shove your way up the ranks
Band together with up to 20 strikers online and compete against other clubs for points. Find the right club for you, team up with friends, and bring your own striker style to the table. Strive to become the world’s top club each season!
Pummel the pitch with up to 8 players
8 players can go for the goal on one Nintendo Switch system, with local wireless, or online. Bring along a secondary striker on the same system in online battles, too. Locally, 4 players on each team can go cleat-to-cleat in individual matches.

GAME FACE Nintendo favourites are unrecognisable with new looks in
NINTENDO favourites are unrecognisable with their new looks. The classic characters were revealed in the first trailer for Nintendo’s Mario Strikers Battle League Football.
It is the third game in the Mario Strikers Series and is set for a worldwide release next month. The ten favourites returning for the launch include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, and Yoshi.
Donkey Kong, Toad, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser will also be making a come back. Each character has also been given their own footie kit rather than their usual outfits.
Mario has stripped out of his blue overalls and long red t-shirt while Luigi has changed out of his unfaded denim jean overalls, brown work shoes, and green long-sleeve shirt. Meanwhile Peach has stepped out of her floor-length pink gown for a football shirt, shorts, long socks and studs.
But she will still be wearing her crown when she steps onto the pitch. And the turtle-like Bowser looks even more fearsome than before in his kit. They were revealed in a first-look trailer for the new game, which was only released in Japanese.
Mario Strikers Battle League will be a chaotic five versus five football video game. Aggressive tactics and tackles will be allowed, but they will give opposing players items to use in their favour. The items include favourites seen in Mario Kart and Mario Tennis, like a slippery banana peel or shell.
New Mario Strikers: Battle League Trailer Confirms Ten Character Roster
A Japanese trailer for Mario Strikers: Battle League has just dropped, and it’s a mixed bag. While the gameplay looks great, running at a smooth 60FPS, it confirms that there will be just ten characters available at launch. This is less than previous entries, and means some fan favourites might not make it into the game until a possible update.
The new trailer confirms that the roster will be: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Rosalina, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Toad, Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser. The most glaring omission here is Daisy, with Bowser Jr and Diddy Kong also not returning from the last entry in the series, Mario Strikers Charged. Newcomer Rosalina will be taking their place, however, and it’s possible that more players will be added post-launch.
Picking a character won’t just be an aesthetic choice, as it is in other Mario spin-offs. As we can see on the character select screen, everyone has unique stats, and these can be changed further with a range of customization options. The new gear has perhaps been implemented to mitigate the disappointment of a smaller roster this time around, as there are a whole bunch of ways to change how your character looks and plays. And as we see demonstrated in the trailer, it really makes a difference.
Some fans have expressed further disappointment over a lack of single-player content being shown off in the new footage. It definitely seems that the focus will be on multiplayer, either local or online. It remains to be seen if there will be much to keep you busy if you’re yet to pick up the online subscription.
