Arceus has landed in the hands of players everywhere, giving gamers around the world a chance to explore the Hisui area in ways no Pokémon game has allowed before. However, one Pokemon Legends fan is using changes to demonstrate that the game’s graphics would look better with cel shading and solid outline.
Pokémon with cell-shading graphics
Despite being very popular, franchise games pokemon The news has been criticized for the lack of it. latest release, Pokemon Legends: Arceus until it innovated to bring a very diverse open world, but the graphics received complaints.
To try to show that it was possible to bring “freshness” to the series, a fan decided to video the game in a version of the genre. in the best way cell shading which renders 3D images giving the effect of 2D, the user pokeyugami Twitter has developed a beautiful art. This technique can be seen in games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Jinshin effect And stronghold.
Using many of the features of Pocket Monster Comics, the video shows a pokemon First generation style. The result of PokéYugami’s work was liked and appreciated by many. The fan’s original tweet garnered nearly 100k likes, over 1.8 comments, and 24k retweets.
One Twitter user said, “This is by far the best Pokemon fanart I’ve seen.” “I will trade the whole franchise” donkey Kong For a single pokemon game in this genre. Awesome!” said another.
Rendering in the Pokemon 3DS Shading Style in Blender
This is sort of a side thing I’ve been doing for the past couple of days, basically revamping how I’ve been doing 3DS style shading (something I’ve done quite a few years ago, and I’m only now kind of getting back into it). After doing some experimentation with better knowledge and being more comfortable in Blender in general, I thought I’d share what I discovered regarding mimicking this kind of shading technique.
What is Cell-shading?
Cel shading, cell shading[dubious – discuss], or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3-D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades. A cel shader is often used to mimic the style of a comic book or cartoon and/or give the render a characteristic paper-like texture.
The Sega Dreamcast title Jet Set Radio, which was revealed at the 1999 Tokyo Game Show, drew media attention for its cel-shaded style. It used cel-shading for its characters and its vibrant visual style has had a lasting influence on the use of cel-shading in video games. The PlayStation title Fear Effect also had character models that are cel-shaded, and was released in February 2000, several months before Jet Set Radio officially released in mid-2000. Since the early 2000s, many notable video games have made use of this style, such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003) and Ōkami (2006).
Cel shading, in contrast to other visual styles such as photorealism, is often used to lend a more artistic or fantastical element to a video game’s environment. In developing Ōkami, director Hideki Kamiya described his vision for the game’s graphics: “I wanted to create a game with the natural beauty of the Japanese countryside… to make a world that was glistening and beautiful.” Producer Atsushi Inaba recalls in a 2004 interview that Clover Studios had “abandoned the realistic style” for Ōkami as they became inspired by traditional Japanese art.
Game studios might choose a style such as cel shading in their development for reasons beyond artistic vision. Cel shaded graphics are usually simple in visual information, which can be useful in some applications. In the case of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, developer Satoru Takizawa states that using this style made it easier to “represent the mechanisms and objects for puzzles [in The Wind Waker] in a more easy-to-understand way”. Takizawa also argues that photorealistic graphics, in contrast, would have “had the adverse effect of making information difficult to represent game-wise”.
How does Pokémon use Cell-Shading?
Pokemon Legends: Arceus has arrived in the hands of players everywhere, giving gamers around the world a chance to explore the Hisui region in ways no Pokemon game has allowed before. This title’s cute and stylized approach to the world of Pokemon builds on the pastel art design of recent Pokemon games. However, one Pokemon Legends: Arceus fan is using edits to show that the game’s graphics would look better with cel shading and solid outlines.
Redditor DemiuM recently shared a post titled “Pokemon Legends: Arceus look much better with cell shading. The post features three screenshots. The first screenshot shows Adaman and Irida of the Diamond and Pearl Clans, respectively standing in a snow-covered and icy landscape. In the unedited version, it can be difficult to make out where the character models end and the snow begins. The edited version doesn’t just make it easier to see both characters, it also adds lines to distinguish the ice formations and mountains in the background from the skybox. The second screenshot uses outlines to add some depth to Cyllene’s office as well as making her outfit easier to take in.
In the third screenshot, DemiuM shows what cel shading could add to Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘s gameplay by editing a screenshot taken mid-battle. The image focuses on a battle between the player’s level 20 Pikachu and a wild level 21 Luxio. Pokemon Legends: Arceus‘ unique battle mechanics are on display, but the real attraction is the way that cel shading makes Pikachu, Luxio, and the player character pop out. Although the outlines are noticeably thicker on Pikachu and Luxio, probably because of the short time spent editing, gamers may have trouble arguing with the results.

Disabling cell shading yields much better performance and improves graphics. Holy isht! Disabling cell shading in the INI file gave me about 15 to 20 fps better performance. And the graphics look better…
Now, the first game to ever use cel shading as the art style was Jet Set Radio, and the game was released in the early 2000s by Dreamcast. This was a bold move by the game designers, but the trend definitely stuck around, and many companies followed suit.
According to Pokémon mythology, Arceus is the oldest and first Pokémon in exisistence — it is often called “The Original One.”
