Rampage: Total Destruction offers a fresh take on an arcade classic complete with everyone’s favorite monsters: George, Lizzie, and Ralph, along with a variety of new monsters to collect and play. Virtually everything in the environment can be damaged, broken, and utterly destroyed with plenty of hilarious results. Players can annihilate cities all over the world in either one or two player mode in this reinvention of the Midway classic.

Rampage: Total Destruction Review

The danger of reviving a successful game of a past era is that it won’t be received in the same way as before. Gaming had moved on quite a lot when Rampage: Total Destruction dropped in 2006 and sadly, the tired format of this series doesn’t hold up under the scrutiny of the modern gamer. The game simply does nothing to evolve from the rather primitive gameplay of past titles in the series. We will admit that the visuals are of a higher quality than the more recent Playstation One releases. However, thanks to the limitations of the Wii, they are hardly worth celebrating.

Then as for the gameplay, it’s actually rather shocking that Rampage: Total Destruction decided to retain the 2D side scrolling formula rather than opening things up and allowing players to terrorize the public in a more open setting. Instead, you will complete simple tasks and challenges on a 2D plain, playing as a selection of characters which are only different in aesthetic as each has the same moveset, playstyle and the cookie cutter character approach is unforgivable, especially for a game that offers so little to begin with.

The storyline, the overall gameplay of Rampage: Total Destruction, the progression and the AI are all laughable in truth. However, the saving grace of this game is the multiplayer functionality. At its core, this game is still a reasonably competent arcade game and the ability to enjoy this with a friend really shines a light on this. The ability to compete to create the most chaos in the city offers a small pocket of joy in this otherwise barren and lifeless affair. So, if you want to tackle this game, do bring a pal along for the ride.

Rampage: Total Destruction Gameplay

Rampage: Total Destruction, as with previous games in the series, has players destroying the environment to earn points. Other actions are available in addition to destroying buildings; people can be eaten and players can also throw vehicles to cause more damage. New to the series is the ability to climb on the front of a building to destroy it.

Hidden in each city are tokens which, when eaten, will unlock new characters and special abilities. Playing well fills a character’s special meter which can be used to utilize special abilities such as Rampage mode or the Roar power. In each city in the last level, Dr. Vector uses a machine to destroy the monsters and the player must destroy his machines to win.

Total Destruction features four game modes. The first is a campaign in which players work to progressively take out cities around the world. King of the City and King of the World are competitive modes where up to four players compete. In King of the City, players strive to rule a city by dominating the most districts. King of the World is a series of King of the City competitions across various cities. The fourth mode is a time trial where players must complete all the districts of a city within a time limit.

Rampage: Total Destruction Game Modes

Campaign (1-2 Players)
In the campaign mode, you take on the role of one of the humans mutated by the Scum Labs Corporation. Dr. Vector is the head of the Scum Labs Corporation and the man responsible for your current predicament. You must embrace your current situation as a giant monster and fight your way through a group of different cities causing as much damage as physically possible, all while freeing other monsters created by Dr. Vector.

King of the City (1-2 Players)
In King of the City, two monsters compete to destroy an entire city, block by block. The object of this mode is to cause more destruction than your fellow monster and while you can attack each other, the main goal is still to destroy every building on every block.

King of the World (1-2 Players)
King of the World is essentially the same as the King of the CIty mode, only on a much grander scale. In King of the World of Rampage: Total Destruction, you compete to fully destroy every city in the game and once a player has been crowned “King of the City” on over half of the available cities, he is then crowned “King of the World”.

Timed Run (1 Player)
In Timed Run you are given a specific amount of time in which to fully destroy one entire city. The mode is broken down into blocks and any time that wasn’t used on one block will carry over to the next block. This mode is only geared towards single-player play, but individuals can compete by alternating to see who can destroy a city in the fastest time possible.

What should change in Rampage: Total Destruction

  • Tightened controls – One of the more frequent complaints from reviewers was that the controls were difficult to master. Sometimes the game’s perspective makes it difficult to determine where in 3D space the character is. This could be resolved by a colored ring below the player along with highlighting the object the player is is currently targeted to grab or climb on.
  • Include exclusives – The game weighs in at around 1.25GB on the Wii, so there’s plenty of room for extra content before hitting XBLA’s 2GB mark. It doesn’t have to be that big, but the point stands that there’s room for a little expansion.
  • Online multiplayer – A lack of online multiplayer debilitates that and drives away potential buyers. People want to play online with their friends, whether it’s Pac-Man or Halo.

What should stay the same in Rampage: Total Destruction

  • GameCube-era graphics – Adding support for 1080p and widescreen would be all that’s necessary to bring the visuals into the solid-but-not-amazing realm. It doesn’t need to look amazing because it already does in its own respect.
  • Rampage anthology – Keeping them as part of the package will bring in additional players looking to purchase those classic games. Having all three games in one package also furthers the overall purchase value.
  • Core gameplay elements – Rampage Total Destruction is great fun in shorter, one-to-three hour sessions. Aside from the few tweaks listed above the game is fine as is.
  • Laugh-out-loud moments – Whether a monster is eating a pedestrian, belching fire, or smiling at the camera the game provides plenty of smiles and chuckles for players.
