Rocket League Voice Chat Returns

Rocket League Voice Chat Returns: How to use it? What are other ways to chat?

According to Psyonix, Voice Chat in Rocket League is returning from May 9th, and here’s everything we know so far about how it will work in this new iteration.

Rocket League’s Voice Chat Feature Is Returning

Psyonix announced it’ll return voice chat to Rocket League with an update scheduled for release on May 9. Voice chat has been removed from Rocket League since the 2.04 update that released on September 14, 2021. The announcement of Voice Chat returning was made on the official Rocket League Twitter account, which linked to a blog post.

According to the blog post, voice chat will be on by default, and to talk, all you need to do is plug in a headset to use it. You’ll be able to access two voice channels, Party Chat and Team Chat, from a new Voice Chat tab found in the Friends List. Once you’re in the tab, you can jump in between all the channels from the Main Menu or even in-game by pressing pause. Players will be able to “fine-tune Voice Chat experience” by customizing their chat options in the Settings Menu.

When a player is in a voice channel, they’ll see one of the following two Speaking and Muted Mic. Speaking will indicate that someone is talking with a green icon above. Or Muted Mic, which will show an X next to a player’s name when they don’t have a microphone or you’ve muted them.

*NEW* VOICE CHAT RETURNS TO ROCKET LEAGUE!

How Voice Chat works in Rocket League

Players will not have any trouble enabling the option to use Voice Chat in Rocket League, as it will be enabled by default. Players will only need to plug in a headset to hear and respond to their teammates.

There will be a new Voice Chat tab in the friends list menu. Players who access this new tab can join, switch, or leave channels, either through the main menu or the pause menu within matches. There will be two different voice channels: Party Chat and Team Chat.

Party Chat

Party Chat is the way players will communicate with their friends. Whenever a Voice Chat-enabled player creates a party, they will automatically join the Party Voice Channel. Other players can join the channel and communicate in and out of matches as the connection persists between games.

Team Chat

Players who want to communicate with teammates who are not on their friends list will use the Team Voice Channel when starting a team match. This voice channel only lasts until the match in question ends and opens again with the start of another match.

Voice Input/Output

These device options are available on PC and let players change audio sources easily whether you’re rocking the streamer mic or the controller headset.

Voice Chat Method

Open Mic is the default Voice Chat setting in Rocket League so that players do not need to press unnecessary buttons when trying to communicate when hitting those double flip resets. Players who prefer to use Push-to-Talk can enable that in the Settings menu. These players will need to bind the PTT button to something that suits them from the Controls tab.

How to mute players

Players on any voice channel will have access to the option to mute individuals also present on that channel. Just select the name of the player you want to mute in the Voice Chat tab and choose the mute option. When a player is muted or does not have a microphone device, a speaker icon with an ‘X’ is displayed.

How to customize Voice Chat

For players to customize their Voice Chat options, they need to access the settings menu. PC players will have the option to change audio sources in the Voice Input/Output option.

In the Voice Chat Method option, players will be able to change the default Open Mic option to the Push-to-Talk version. To use Push-to-Talk, players will need to bind the PTT button from the Controls tab to a key of their choice.

Other Ways To Chat With Friends In Rocket League

If you want to avoid using the voice chat in Rocket League, you’ll need to turn to different methods of communication. Thus, we are breaking down our recommendations for each of platform…

Rocket League Voice Chat on PlayStation
We would recommend using the dedicated voice chat available via the Party System in PS Plus. This is a very efficient and easy system to use, it’s quick and if you have internet that’s good enough to play Rocket League online, then you’ll have no problem doing this. Simply add your friends as PlayStation friends and then use the integrated voice chat system.

Rocket League Voice Chat on Xbox
Similarly to the system on PlayStation, we would recommend using the Xbox Online Network to talk with your friends. Again, make a party and start voice chatting with your friends over your Xbox Live account.

Rocket League Voice Chat on PC
Either using Steam or the Epic Games Store (preferably Steam) make a group chat with your friends, connect your headset to the PC and use that to voice chat in Rocket League. You can run these applications in the background while playing Rocket League with no problem at all. Steam Chat is your best option as it is a fantastic and well-designed chat system.

Rocket League Voice Chat on Nintendo Switch
Well the first thing is… just don’t. We would recommend ignoring the Nintendo Switch’s online infrastructure, putting Steam on your mobile phone, and using this for voice chatting. Seriously, it might seem like a bit of a roundabout way, but you really won’t regret it.

VOICE CHAT STATES

When active in a Voice Channel, Players will appear on the Voice Chat tab in Rocket League in one of the following states:

  • Speaking – This state is displayed by a green speaker icon when a player is actively speaking.
  • Muted Mic – This state is displayed by a speaker with an X beside it when you have muted a player, or the player does not have a valid speaking

In the row of icons at the top, tap the speech bubble. Here, you can select your currently equipped quick chat options on the right and replace them with new ones on the left. Or, if you see one you like on the left, you can select it, then tap a place on the right side where you want it. Simple.
