The Guilty Gear series has gone from obscure to mainstream, so for any new players, here are some of the most powerful characters for you to consider.
The Guilty Gear Characters
Arc System Works gives fighting game fans yet another thrilling combat experience with Guilty Gear Strive. As a Guilty Gear title, fans can expect no less but fast-paced combat intertwined with technical combat mechanics. Strive will see Sol Badguy confront That Man, the person who turned him into a Gear, and settle his fate once and for all.
And thankfully, Sol isn’t alone in his journey. Alongside Sol Badguy are 14 other playable characters – two newcomers and the rest a part of Guilty Gear’s rather diverse roster of crazily powerful characters. However, from a player’s point of view, just how would one rank Strive’s current playable roster?
Guilty Gear Strive – How to choose your main character!
So here we are with a video to celebrate the launch of Guilty Gear Strive and its to help you find how who your main character is going to be! Guilty Gear has many characters all fully unique from each other and while the rule of cool applies, pick who you like, this will hopefully help give you a better understanding of what each character is capable of!
The Best & Most Powerful Characters in The Guilty Gear series
BEDMAN
Once you think Guilty Gear can’t get any weirder, they introduce a new villain who is Freddy Krueger as played by Mandark from Dexter’s Lab. It’s a completely batshit and creative design for such a delightfully unsavory character. Like, Bedman is a guy who casually kills a girl’s dog just to help her understand that living beings are all distinct and have differences, and that’s what makes it all beautiful. The kid is messed up.
SLAYER
In a futuristic world of magic terminators, shadow beasts, and metal witches fighting to decide the future of humanity itself, there stands a man who simply shrugs in the background because a lot of this excitement is simply beneath him. That Slayer’s defeat does nothing more than show him casually laying on the floor, mildly amused, speaks volumes for how little a shit this vampire badass gives.
SOL BADGUY
They named a character Sol Badguy, and we’re supposed to just accept that. That’s the stupidest name. The guy holds his future sword the same way Freddie Mercury held his mic. That’s supreme.
Not only is Sol one of the best Guilty Gear characters, but he’s one of the best main heroes in a fighting game. He stands in the high tier with Terry Bogard, getting by via punching people so hard that explosions happen.
FAUST/DR. BALDHEAD
Baldhead was off-putting but definitely memorable. He didn’t truly hit his stride until he became Faust, adding inexplicable cartoon physics to his febrile behavior. He’s the Deadpool of the series in that he’s the perfect mix of nonsense action and emotional backstory. Despite all the blood on his hands, he pulls off so much whimsy that his reality-breaking actions can easily make you smile.
JUSTICE
Despite being killed off in the first game, Justice is the constant source of dread in Guilty Gear’s story. Many of the games have revolved around the threat of Justice’s return, whether it’s getting her daughter to follow in her footsteps, cloning, or even resurrection. And yes, Justice is bad news because when she was active, she led a war against mankind that lasted 101 years. She only lost because she was sealed away.
DIZZY
Dizzy makes me think of when someone is writing a Justice League story and has to come up with a reason for Superman to not be around, like he’s busy in space or off in another dimension. Dizzy isn’t the protagonist of Guilty Gear, but she is the daughter of two of the most powerful characters, and is mainly held back by plot contrivance and her attempts at pacifism.
AD
Her so-called “Instant Kill” in Guilty Gear Xrd paints the best picture. Dizzy reluctantly fires a projectile that misses its mark, but leaves a horrifying mushroom cloud in the distance. Her freaked out opponents can only survey the damage, slowly turn to her, and surrender. Again, that’s what she’s capable of when holding back.
ASUKA R. KREUZ/THAT MAN
He’s alluded to in Sol Badguy’s ending in the first Guilty Gear game, making you imagine he’ll be the final boss of the next game or maybe the one after that. Instead, he makes mysterious appearances in the Guilty Gear X games. We never get a good look at him, but we see that he’s capable of easily slapping aside anyone who gets in his way. Then he pops up in Guilty Gear 2, including in a boss battle where Dragon Install Sol Badguy can’t even dent him.
The Valentine Units: Valentine, Ephelt, Ramlethal, And Jack-O
The Valentines are probably the most unique inlcusion out of everyone, considering they seem to be “vessels” of organic origin created by the Universal Will. Now, the Valentines all have different abilities, personalities, and goals, but the one thing they do have in common is that they’re unique lifeforms birthed in “The Backyard” who use the genetic code of Aria Hale as a base.
DIZZY
Coming up now is one of if not the most deceptively powerful characters in the entire franchise, Dizzy, the “Child of Light and Dark”. The first thing you need to know about Dizzy is that she’s a half-Gear half-human hybrid. Secondly, looking at her you’ll probably immediately notice the two specter-like characters close to her, these are actually her “wings” or “guardians” and they go by Necro and Undine.
Asuka R. Kreutz
Finally, we get to talk about “That Man”. The long-running “antagonist” of Guilty Gear, “That Man” goes by many different names such as “The Devil” or “Gearmaker”, but we finally know him now as Asuka R. Kreutz. Asuka was one of the three lead characters on the original Gear Cells project back before the Crusades, along with Frederick and Aria Hale. But, he also has an even more mysterious past as the fifth disciple of “The Original”, the man who first found the Backyard and introduced humanity to magic.
Ariels And Happy Chaos
If we’re taking the power levels of I-No and Axl Low from the end of GG Strive into consideration, they might be as strong as both Ariels and Happy Chaos, but “on average” these two are scarier characters in Guilty Gear thanks to their intellect and Backyard-based background.
Luckily, the most recent entry in the series, Guilty Gear Strive is easily the most accessible and newcomer-friendly entry in the series’ history, whilst not sacrificing the series’ core fighting game depth.
Anime based on video games may not have the most consistent track record, but if there’s one game series that could benefit from it, it’s Guilty Gear.
Guilty Gear Strive is an excellent fighting game that manages to bridge the gap between depth and accessibility in a way that doesn’t ruin the series’ core tenets—no small feat. Strive’s stronger neutral focus, slightly slower pacing, rich characters, and mechanically robust combat are second to none.
Indeed, Guilty Gear Strive is a ridiculously good looking game. It’s easily Arc System Works’ most impressive release yet, and that’s saying a hell of a lot when we already have the likes of Rev 2, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Granblue Fantasy Versus to gawk at.
