D.Va has always been a popular Tank hero in Overwatch. Everything from her abilities to her aesthetics has made her a frequent addition to any match. With the launch of the Overwatch 2 PvP Beta, a number of heroes have been given some overhauls and reworks.
D.Va Overwatch 2 Rework Detailed
Some Overwatch fans might have mixed feelings over the extent of D.Va’s rework. Unlike some of the other tanks, like Doomfist, D.Va isn’t getting much in terms of an overhaul:
- Base Health increased from 300 to 450
- Base Armor reduced from 300 to 200
Fusion Cannons
- Primary Fire movement penalty reduced from 50% to 40%
- Weapon spread reduced from 4 to 3.5
As you can see, D.Va’s main changes come in the form of adjustments to her base health and base armor, having been increased and reduced respectively. As for her Fusion Cannons, players might find that they’ve become a bit more streamlined, having weapon spread reduced as well as the movement penalty.
Of course, D.Va isn’t the only hero who’s been given a rework for Overwatch 2. The likes of Orisa, Doomfist, and more have received some significant changes.
D.Va is SO FUN in Overwatch 2!
D.va Abilities in Overwatch 2
Defense Matrix: D.va activates a front-facing shield that absorbs bullets and projectiles. Defense Matrix can also absorb certain ultimate abilities that start out as projectiles, like Zarya’s Graviton Surge and Hanzo’s Dragonstrike.
Boosters: While in her mech, D.Va emits a burst of speed that can push her forward or up into the air. She can change directions and fire while Boosters are active.
Micro Missiles: After a short delay, D.Va shoots a burst of small missiles in the direction she’s facing.
Self-Destruct (ultimate): D.va ejects herself out of her mech and sets it to explode, which it does after three seconds. After the mech explodes, she can use Call Mech to summon another one.
Overwatch 2 devs defend major Tank role changes, confirm D.Va & Winston buffs
With Overwatch 2 trimming team sizes down to just five players, the Tank role is taking a major hit as only one is allowed per side. Though Blizzard has now defended this drastic shift and revealed some hefty buffs on the way for fan favorites like D.Va and Winston.
Although it’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new on Overwatch 2, the community is still going back and forth over changes announced in May. During the last gameplay showcase, Blizzard confirmed the sequel is swapping from 6v6 to 5v5 gameplay.
As a result, Tanks were cut down, with only one allowed per team moving forward. This fundamental shift completely alters the core experience players have grown accustomed to over the years, and naturally, there’s been a great deal of concern.
Looking to defend the radical decision, Overwatch Community Manager Andy Belford took to the Blizzard forums with an explanation along with some big announcements.
Teams will have to pick just one Tank for their lineup in Overwatch 2.
By the time Overwatch 2 launches, players will have more than six years of Tank experience under their belts. With two Tank heroes in every game, there come certain playstyles, tendencies, and metas. In the future, the Overwatch experience will be entirely different with just one-half of the Tank power.
This means no ‘double shields,’ and thus, a new responsibility in the field. Rather than serving as “push-leading protectors,” Tanks in Overwatch 2 will have another purpose.
Similarly, Tanks “rooted in mobility” will have their “utility improved” along with various additional buffs. Certain heroes like D.Va, Wrecking Ball, and Winston will all gain more “defensive stopping power,” he added.
D.Va Strategy in Overwatch 2
D.Va is a unique tank with some mobility. With very high health and Ability-dva2.png Boosters, she can close a gap to the enemy with ease. She has high damage output at close-range, making her a strong fighter in a 1-on-1 match. Her Ability-dva3.png Defense Matrix is useful against all incoming projectiles, protecting her teammates from enemy fire. The Ability-dva7.png Micro Missiles deal high amount of damage when used in close range. She is a dangerous flanker in the Tank class, dealing consistent damage to the enemy.
Ability-dva4.png Self-Destruct will wipe all opponents within the blast area. However, she doesn’t have an extended barrier to properly protect her team like Reinhardt. She is also slow while firing, allowing the enemy to outrun her to disengage or move around her to distract her aiming. Both Ability-dva1.png Fusion Cannons and Ability-dva7.png Micro Missiles are ineffective against anything further than medium-range, meaning she can be outranged by the enemy before she even has a chance to close a gap with Ability-dva2.png Boosters.
D.Va And New Overwatch 2 heroes
The New Blood comic series has been a hit with fans. The Dark Horse comics follow Cole Cassidy on his quest to recruit new members to Overwatch to take on the Null Sector and Talon threat.
On March 15, the fifth and final chapter debuted and sees D.Va and the rest of the MEKA Squad fight an army of omnics, but things get dramatic when the Korean hero’s boss wouldn’t let her work with Overwatch.
While we advise you check out the comic on your own, if you don’t mind spoilers and what this could mean for Overwatch 2, continue reading down below.
As the battle raged and the MEKA force found themselves in danger, Cassidy, Pharah, Zarya, and Baptiste showed up to save the day.
Once the dust settled, D.Va was allowed by her superior to work with Overwatch and leave with them, while the rest of MEKA group would stay in Korea.
However, before taking off, Cassidy gave the leader some data on all the threats they’ve faced so far, suggesting that this isn’t the last we’ll see of her or the rest of the Korean pilots.
The four members of MEKA who could become playable heroes are Casino, King, Overlord, and D.Mon. Interestingly, the latter actually had official concept art made showing what she could be like as an actual in-game character.
Unfortunately, it may be sometime before more MEKA squad members and d.va are playable in Overwatch 2 as only one new hero, Sojourn, will be available in the OW2 beta come April. Still, the devs are teasing plenty of tanks and supports in development for future beta iterations, so there’s a chance we see them in action later on in 2022. We’ll just have to see what the future holds.
Overwatch 2 was first announced back at BlizzCon 2019, and updates on what to expect from the title were thin on the ground for a long while. But Blizzard recently started dropping details on the game, although we’re still waiting on that release date.
Overwatch 2 (like Overwatch) is not free to play, and players must purchase the hero shooter from Blizzard to partake in this version of the game.
D.va is married to Brigitte, this is canon and confirmed by Geguri.
Va’s age was initially 16 before it upped to 19 just because of a particular Overwatch internet thing happening to blow up, but that can’t be true, right? I’ve tried to search the archive web and the gamepedia and searched for other sources, but nothing says that.
