Cameron Johnson, a top high school lefty pitching prospect, was selected in the 20th round of the 2023 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. However, it was widely expected that Johnson would not sign with the Cardinals and would instead enroll at LSU as planned.
According to multiple reports, Johnson has opted to stick with his original plan and enroll at LSU. A source told LSU Country that Johnson “will not sign his pro contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and is headed to #LSU.”
Johnson is considered the No. 2 left-handed high school pitching prospect in the country. He has a fastball that has touched 98 mph and a 6-foot-4 frame that projects well for a future starter.
Johnson’s decision to pitch for LSU next season is a big boost for the defending national champions. LSU was expected to lose some draft picks from this year’s championship squad, but will return Johnson to help anchor the weekend rotation in 2024.
This is seen as a good move for Johnson’s development as well. Getting at least one season of experience at LSU under pitching coach and head coach Jay Johnson could help refine his skills before eventually joining the pro ranks.
