The United States men’s national soccer team (USMNT) is the representative team for the United States in men’s international soccer competitions. The team is under the control of the United States Soccer Federation and is affiliated with FIFA and CONCACAF.

Throughout its history, the U.S. team has participated in eleven FIFA World Cups, beginning with the inaugural tournament in 1930. In that first World Cup, the team achieved an impressive third-place finish, which remains the best result by a team outside of UEFA and CONMEBOL. They made subsequent appearances in 1934 and 1950, with a notable victory over England in the latter. However, the team experienced a lengthy absence from the World Cup until qualifying again in 1990. As hosts in 1994, the U.S. earned an automatic berth and reached the round of sixteen before being eliminated by Brazil. They have since qualified for the next five World Cups, becoming regular participants and frequently advancing to the knockout stage. The team’s best performance was reaching the quarter-finals in 2002, where they controversially lost to Germany. In the 2009 Confederations Cup, the U.S. made it to the final, defeating top-ranked Spain in the semi-finals before falling to Brazil.

The U.S. team also competes in various continental tournaments, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup, CONCACAF Nations League, and Copa América. They have been successful in the Gold Cup, winning the tournament on seven occasions, and have claimed two Nations League titles. In the Copa América, the team achieved a fourth-place finish in 1995 and 2016. The current head coach of the team is Gregg Berhalter, who was reappointed in June 2023. B.J. Callaghan has been serving as interim coach since May 2023 and will continue in that role until the conclusion of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
