Yankees’ Reliever Jimmy Cordero Suspended Under MLB’s Domestic Violence Policy

Major League Baseball has suspended New York Yankees reliever Jimmy Cordero for the rest of the 2023 season due to a violation of the league’s domestic violence policy.

The length of suspensions under this policy is not predetermined but negotiated with the MLB Players Association. Cordero voluntarily agreed to a 76-game ban, which is one of the longer suspensions handed out by the league.

Notable suspensions under the policy include Trevor Bauer (initially 324 games, reduced to 194 on appeal), Sam Dyson (162 games), Jose Torres (100 games), Hector Olivera (82 games), and Cordero’s Yankees teammate Domingo German (81 games). MLB does not disclose specific investigation details or findings when announcing suspensions under the policy.

In a statement, the team said: “The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

Jimmy Cordero Domestic Violence case will bring abouthis downfall!

After a hiatus from pitching in the majors since 2020, the 31-year-old Cordero significantly impacted the New York Yankees’ bullpen. Their relief corps has been crucial in keeping the team competitive during a period of offensive struggle, especially since Aaron Judge’s placement on the injured list on June 7 due to a torn ligament in his right big toe.

With a 2.82 ERA, the Yankees’ relievers boast the best performance in the major leagues, minimizing home runs allowed and achieving the highest ground-ball rate.

Cordero, who previously played for the Nationals, Blue Jays, and White Sox, established himself as a dependable middle-innings reliever under manager Aaron Boone, utilizing his fastball, which consistently reaches speeds above 97 mph, and an effective slider.

He showcased his skills by not surrendering a run in 23 out of his 31 appearances. After joining the team in 2022 and spending the season in the minor leagues, Cordero performed admirably in the current season, recording a 3.86 ERA in 32⅔ innings.
