The Zenigame Squad, known as the Squirtle Squad in English, is a group of Squirtle who were abandoned by their Trainers. They are easily recognized by the sunglasses they wear.
Their debut episode, “Here Comes the Squirtle Squad,” showcased their mischievous behavior in a small town in the Kanto region. They engaged in activities such as stealing, graffiti, and causing trouble for travelers. Meowth of Team Rocket tricked them into assisting him, Jessie, and James in capturing Ash’s Pikachu. During the pursuit, Pikachu was injured by a Goldeen. To help Pikachu recover, Ash convinced the Squirtle Squad to allow him to obtain a Super Potion. However, they set a deadline for Ash to return, or else they threatened to harm Misty (in the English dub, they threatened to dye her hair purple).
When Ash returned, Team Rocket arrived and planned to attack the Squirtle Squad, leading to a forest fire. Seeking shelter, everyone took cover in the Squirtle Squad’s cave. However, the leader of the Squirtle Squad got stuck on its back, prompting Ash to go back and assist. With their combined efforts, Ash and the Squirtle Squad defeated Team Rocket and extinguished the fire. In recognition of their heroic actions, they were honored as “Town Firefighters” by Officer Jenny.
Ultimately, the leader of the Squirtle Squad chose to join Ash’s team, as Ash’s newly acquired Squirtle wanted to repay him for saving its life.
