NFTs are all the rage right now, and every big company is thinking about how to monetize this new concept. Do you see where we’re going with this? According to the well-known leaker Ralph on Twitter, who leaked a lot of information about the upcoming Modern Warfare II, Activision seems to be thinking about introducing NFTs in Call of Duty.

However, it’s no big secret that NFTs aren’t particularly popular with gamers. Ghost Recon have tried, and EA have considered NFTs in FIFA. And like clockwork, both of these attempts created monstrous s***storms in their communities.

CALL OF DUTY COULD INTRODUCE NFTS

Right as we were getting thankful that NFTs as a fad were beginning to dissipate, it looks like Activision is considering bringing them to the biggest gaming franchise in the world. Wicked.

According to Call of Duty leaker RalphsValve, Activision is planning on giving players a lot more freedom when it comes to personalising their accounts, making it so players could be able to attach calling cards, emblems, avatars, and statistics to a wider Activision account.

How Will NFTs Work In Call of Duty?

Should NFTs nevertheless appear at some point in Call of Duty, the question arises as to what the whole thing could look like in-game. With Call of Duty, there are near endless possibilities.

A very simple one would be to introduce emblems or calling cards as NFTs. Players could then have a unique calling card NFT on their profile, similar to how NFTs can also be used as a profile picture on Twitter.

The other possibility would be that weapon camos, operator skins, and other in-game cosmetics would be offered as NFTs. That would mean that we can trade these cosmetics in the future. It sounds crazy at first, but it’s actually an ancient idea.

WHAT COULD CALL OF DUTY NFTS LOOK LIKE?

It’d be an interesting application for NFTs in-game, and frankly, it could yet prove a success for Call of Duty – restricting it to a profile-picture aesthetic would help to keep it internalised and keep dorks in their own little bubble.

Plus, it might even work in the opposite direction and prove that NFTs don’t have any actual value beyond the owner’s ability to flex on other dorks – so it could actually have some hilarious side effects.

Either way, NFTs coming to Call of Duty will be controversial, though the series has dealt with worse dramas in the past. It may be stupid, but it’s gonna make Activision a lot of money. And that’s all they’re after, really.

NFTs aren’t certain

EA backtracked(opens in new tab) on its commitment to NFTs earlier this year after CEO Andrew Wilson called the tokens and play-to-earn games “the future of our industry”. Months later, he reneged on that stance, saying the long-term functionality of NFTs and the blockchain remains to be seen, and clarifying they’re not something EA is currently “driving hard on”.

Activision hasn’t made any official announcement regarding NFTs coming to Call of Duty 2022, nor has said whether it has any plans to pursue the technology in the future.

Activision Blizzard’s stance on NFTs is further complicated by Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of the mega-publisher. Xbox boss Phil Spencer, has previously voiced his concerns over NFTs, suggesting it’s not something Microsoft’s gaming wing is interested in pursuing currently, but didn’t rule them out entirely.

“I think there’s a lot of speculation and experimentation that’s happening, and that some of the creative that I see today feels more exploitive than about entertainment,” Spencer told Axios(opens in new tab) last November.

“I don’t think it necessitates that every NFT game is exploitive. I just think we’re kind of in that journey of people figuring it out,” he added.

It’s not difficult to see how NFTs might be integrated into Call of Duty. Among the bevy of emblems, skins, and calling cards players unlock in the multiplayer FPS, some may be sold as blockchain tokens instead of traditional in-game items.

As for whether Ralph’s claims can be trusted, the leaker previously said that the upcoming Call of Duty title will feature a morality system, with player decisions influencing the moral compass of their character. That was later corroborated by VGC(opens in new tab), adding weight to the leaker’s credentials.

Ralph only claims Activision is “considering” integrating NFTs into the next Call of Duty release. That’s a notably non-committal position, and EA’s backtracking earlier in the year shows that major triple-A publishers are capable of U-turning with the prevailing wind. For now, don’t be expecting NFTs to crop up in the next Call of Duty, but know it’s a possibility.
