Gran Turismo 7: the A-8 Dirt Driving: Beginner and A-9 Hairpins license

If you want to get a Gold on National A license test A-8 in Gran Turismo 7, and you’re playing version 1.06 of the game, then it’s almost certainly impossible. Thanks to a bug accidentally added in the 1.06 update, some of the vehicles in some of the license tests, missions, and circuit overviews are fitted with the wrong tires. In particular, it affects all of the off-road events in these categories. So, Dirt Driving: Beginner, at Colorado Springs – Lake, is much harder than it ought to be. Start the test and take a look at the bottom-left of the screen (with Display Settings set to Display All). Where your Toyota Tundra Pro ’19’s tires are marked CM (for Comfort Medium), it ought to say D (for Dirt). GT7 developer Polyphony Digital has promised to fix this in a future update.

For now, it is still possible to pass the test, maybe even get a Silver. Start by hugging the inside of the first bend at full throttle. You can go onto the grass; it won’t slow you down. Aim to be in the middle of the track as you come out of the first bend then, well in advance of the second bend, come off the accelerator (don’t brake) and turn hard to the left to start a powerslide. Slide around the bend with your foot down, turn a long way to the left to account for the fact that the bend sharpens a little after the crest. For the final corner, you don’t even need to ease off, just turn hard to the right just before the crest, and slide through the apex, then power ahead to the finish line.

How to pass the A-9 Hairpins license test in Gran Turismo 7

In Gran Turismo 7, it’s pretty easy to earn Credits, complete Menu Books, and increase your Collector Level. But, as in every Gran Turismo game, there is one major obstacle to progress in GT7: license tests. The National B license is pretty straightforward, and the first eight tests of the National A license are fairly easy too. But then along comes test A-9 where, perhaps ironically, the layout of the road looks a lot like the difficulty spike you just hit. But help for you and your Honda NSX Type R ‘92 is at hand. It’s really tough to get a Gold on this test, but we were hitting solid Silvers pretty consistently, and all you need to progress is a Bronze pass.

Before you attempt the A-9 license test, we recommend turning off Active Stability Management (ASM) and Countersteering Assistance in Assist Settings, as these can make it harder to turn tightly.

The in-game tips emphasize the importance of exiting the hairpin correctly, but we’d argue that the key point here is actually how you take the right-hander before the hairpin. The in-game Demonstration eases off a lot for this bend, but we found it more effective to ease off just a little as we entered the bend, then accelerate fully (but very briefly) through it. The important thing is to cross the apex of this right-hander in as straight a line as possible.

Brake hard just as you pass the end of the red and white curb. If you do this too early, the car’s weight will shift to the left, making it harder to take the hairpin. If you do it too late, you won’t be able to lose enough speed to take the hairpin smoothly. You want to be accelerating very lightly as you cross the apex of the hairpin, gradually increasing your acceleration to full as you exit. If you find yourself taking the hairpin too wide, a quick tap of the handbrake (Circle on a controller) will help to tighten your turn. But anything longer than a quick tap will make you spin out, so use it delicately.

How to play online multiplayer in Gran Turismo 7

To play Gran Turismo 7 online, you first have to unlock the Sport and Multiplayer Pavilions on the World Map. To unlock them, you have to complete Menu Book 9, which takes a while, but GT7 really loves to drip-feed its content. Completion of Menu Book 9 unlocks three different multiplayer modes: Sport, Multiplayer Lobby, and 2P Split Screen. The first two are online.

Multiplayer Lobby is a more social, traditional multiplayer mode in which you can either create your own room, or join one created by someone else. There are a lot of different parameters to choose from when creating a room, or filtering for one to join: room mode, race type, region, track, PP limit, car category, and whether or not BoP/Tuning, regular Tuning, and Auto-Drive are allowed. This is the best place to race other players in exactly the conditions you prefer, but results are inconsequential — there are no rankings or leaderboards in Multiplayer Lobby mode.

More competitive GT7 players should play Sport mode. This is a ranked mode with a lot of strict regulations and rules, by which the game does its best to ensure that only the most skilled drivers rise to the top. Instead of traditional rooms and lobbies, Sport mode is structured into races and Championships with scheduled start times. Sport Mode tracks not only your race results, but also your sportsmanship. You’re racing to improve your Driver Rating (DR), but this can’t go up unless your Sportsmanship Rating (SR) is also good. So, in Sport mode, ramming other players is strictly punished.

For the absolute most competitive (and sportsmanlike) GT7 drivers, there are Leagues, which run for the duration of seasons. Some, but not all, Sport mode championships affect League rankings.

Is Gran Turismo 7 cross platform/crossplay?

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 is an upcoming entry in Sony’s prestige racing franchise. Announced in 2020, the game was initially slated to release in 2021. Due to complications brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the game was postponed to March 4, 2022.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Gran Turismo 7 will have crossplay between PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.

Another interesting tidbit Yamauchi shared was that Gran Turismo 7’s campaign mode will need an internet connection to play to prevent cheating. He added, “The only part of the game that doesn’t require an online connection is the arcade mode.”

Is Gran Turismo 7 open world?

Gran Turismo 7 is not an open-world game, so players will not be getting any of the free-roaming features they are expecting. While that is a bummer, it shouldn’t come off as a surprise to fans of the franchise. The reason is quite simple, the Gran Turismo franchise was never focused around that.
