If you’re in the market for a gaming monitor, LG is preparing to launch three new products, including a 47.5-inch OLED model.

LG UltraGear Teases 3 New Gaming Monitors

The LG 48GQ900 is the company’s first OLED gaming monitor in its UltraGear brand. It was first announced in March, but LG said on Wednesday that the monitor will launch this month in Japan before arriving in North America and Europe.

The LG 48GQ900 stands out for its large size and 4K screen resolution. It will also boast a 120Hz refresh rate, which can be overclocked to 138Hz. In addition, the monitor supports a 0.1-millisecond response time.

“Perfect for PC and console gaming, the new model offers the superb color reproduction and contrast of OLED and features LG’s anti-glare low reflection (AGLR) coating, which reduces visual distractions so that users can focus their attention fully on the gameplay,” LG said.

If the 48GQ900 is too big, the company is releasing two 31.5-inch monitors, which will also be arriving in Japan this month before a rollout in North America and Europe.

The first, the LG UltraGear 32GQ950, also offers a 4K resolution but uses a Nano IPS display. The screen also supports a 144Hz refresh rate, which can be overclocked to 160Hz.

“The Nano IPS 1ms gaming display is LG’s first 4K model to implement ATW Polarizer technology, which improves the panel’s ability to ensure lively, accurate colors and deep, dark blacks across a wide viewing angle,” the company said. It’s also been certified as a VESA Display HDR1000

The second monitor, the LG UltraGear 32GQ850, still uses a Nano IPS panel, but downgrades the resolution to 1440p. On the plus side, the display supports a 240Hz refresh rate, which can be overclocked to 260Hz.

Starting at the lower end of the spectrum, we have the UltraGear 32GQ850, which features a QHD (2560 x 1440) Nano IPS panel. For those unfamiliar, LG’s Nano IPS technology involves using nanoparticles intermingled with a display’s LED backlight. This nanoparticle integration is partly responsible for the display’s 98 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space.

LG also incorporated Advanced True Wide (ATW) Polarizer technology, which further boosts color reproduction and delivers darker blacks. Panel makers are always looking for ways to increase black levels and contrast on IPS panels, and the ATW Polarizer seems to be the latest effort from LG (following its IPS Black technology). Interestingly, LG hasn’t provided us with any specs regarding the contrast ratio or brightness for any of the new monitors announced today.

LG says that the UltraGear 32GQ850 has a 1ms (GtG) response time and a refresh rate of 240Hz (although it is overclockable within the OSD to 260Hz). In addition, the monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified and supports Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro.

The middle child of the new 2022 UltraGear family is the UltraGear 32GQ950, which also has a 31.5-inch panel. However, it features a native 4K resolution (3840 x 2160). It also boasts 98 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color space thanks to an ATW Polarizer and a 1ms response time. However, the panel’s refresh rate is dialed back to a native 144Hz. But you can overclock the refresh rate to 160Hz if you’re looking for that extra edge in competitive gaming. Adaptive-Sync technologies from Nvidia and AMD are supported, and the UltraGear 32GQ850 is DisplayHDR 1000 certified.

As for what makes the 48GQ900 a gaming monitor beyond its UltraGear branding, it has a 120Hz refresh rate that you can overclock to 138Hz. LG also put an anti-glare low reflection coating on the display, which is technically 47.5 inches with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160.

The 48GQ900 gets more points for being a gaming monitor since it’s compatible with both Nvidia’s G-Sync and AMD’s FreeSync technologies. But we have to take points away since it comes with a remote, which LG swears is “specifically designed for enhanced gaming convenience.”

The 48GQ900 will have two built-in 20W speakers and three HDMI ports, one Display Port, one upstream and two downstream USB 3.0 ports, and a four-pole headphone jack that supports audio and mic.

SMALLER ALTERNATIVES — If you’re not looking for something so big to game on, LG introduced two 32-inch monitors: The 32GQ850 and the 32GQ950. If you want a higher refresh rate, the 32GQ850 is 240Hz, and can be overclocked to 260Hz — but it only has a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution. If you prefer higher resolution, the 32GQ950 offers 4K resolution, but only a 144Hz refresh rate that’s overclockable to 160Hz.

Even though LG announced these three monitors, there’s no pricing details available yet. LG did say that the UltraGear monitors would be first available this month in Japan, later coming to markets in North America, Europe, and Asia.
