The recent release of Minecraft Caves & Cliffs update has changed some fundamental aspects in regards to where Ores spawn. Prior to this update, Ores would spawn at a certain level, and continue to generate all the way down to the bottom.
Where to find all Ores in Minecraft 1.18
With the most recent changes, however, each Ore has a certain level within which they will spawn. Some Ores will not generate below a certain level. In addition, specific biomes will increase the probability of finding certain Ores. This means players are in for quite some exploration in order to find every Ore.
Coal Ore
Coal is found between levels 95 to 136. This is the most common ore and can be found in abundance near regular stone caves and mountainous regions.
Copper Ore
Copper is mostly found in levels 48. This is the newest Ore, added in 1.17. Copper also tends to spawn in abundance in Dripstone Cave biomes.
Iron Ore
Iron is found between levels 15 to 232. Iron is important for crafting tools and armor during the mid-game. It is worth noting that Iron tends to spawn at a higher rate in lower mountains.
Lapis Lazuli Ore
Lapis Lazuli is found within levels 64, all the way down to bedrock. However, the best place to look for it is at level -1.
Redstone Ore
Redstone can be found from level 16, all the way down the Bedrock. However, Redstone is most commonly found in large amounts between the levels -32 to -59.
Gold Ore
Gold is found between the levels 32 to -64. It is usually most abundant in level -16. The interesting thing about Gold Ore, however, is that the spawn rate increases significantly when in a Badlands biome.
Emerald Ore
Generally speaking, the easiest way to get Emerald is by trading with villagers. The unique property of Emerald Ores is that they spawn exclusively in Mountain biomes. Owing to this, it will spawn anywhere between levels 320 to -16. The best place to find it would be level 236.
Diamond Ore
Diamonds Ore is the most precious and the one everyone is looking for. If a player is mining for Diamonds at level -63, they might find a lot of Bedrock. So, it is more advisable to mine at level -59, where it can be found quite commonly.
What is Ore Distribution in Minecraft?
Minecraft works on a chunk base system. That means it renders and creates its worlds in a set of chunks. These chunks are a set of 16 blocks in all axis on the dimensional plane of the game. And each of the chunks has ores generating in it at various world heights. The new update increased the world height to 320 blocks and the bottommost point to -64 blocks.
The chunk base system remains true and the same for each edition of Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. So, you can expect to find similar ores at similar world heights in each in-game chunk. But do keep in mind that there are some biome-based changes in this update as well. We will cover those later in the guide. Beyond that, you also get a variety in the types of ore clusters as veins, groups, and more.
Where Do Ores Generate in Minecraft 1.18.1?
Now, let’s focus on what you are here for. We will cover heights and ore distribution for each in-game ore of Minecraft 1.18.1. Unlike earlier versions, Minecraft 1.18.1 ore generation isn’t systematic or uniform for all ores. But thanks to the developer notes and in-game testing, we can confirm and understand how the new ore distribution works in Minecraft 1.18.1. So, let’s not waste more time and see where to find each ore in the game.
Added Coal Ore, Iron Ore, Gold Ore, Diamond Ore, Redstone Ore, Lapis Lazuli Ore, Emerald Ore and Nether Quartz Ore.
Emerald Ore is the rarest ore to date in Minecraft (25 times more so than Diamond Ore, while almost always spawning in only one-block veins). When mined (with an Iron Pickaxe or higher), it drops an Emerald; the only implemented use of Emeralds to date is for trading with Villagers.
Luckily, you won’t need a Diamond Pickaxe to mine it. Just a simple iron or above will do the trick.
Most common ore. Must be mined with a pickaxe, but it can be mined with just a wooden one. Used for fuel in furnace. When you destroy the coal ore block you will get a piece of coal.
