Samsung‘s recent reentry into projection has borne new fruit in the form of The Freestyle, a truly portable projector that offers a fresh take on what a display device should be able to do.

Priced at $899, it looks like a toy, but it’s a serious piece of hardware that leverages Samsung’s smart TV platform and even its calibration tools to create something that feels new. Oh, and in addition to acting as a projector, it’s a full-fledged smart speaker, as well as a colorful and programmable ambient light source. In other words, it’s refreshingly fun!

Tucked inside a cylindrical chassis that looks a lot like a tabletop spotlight are a projector, a speaker system, a far-field mic array, and Samsung’s smart TV platform, including picture processing capabilities and even auto-calibration (with compatible phones). The exterior of the projector is covered with a soft and flexible rubber-like material that should offer resistance against minor bumps and scrapes. The front of the unit, where the lens is located, has touch-sensitive controls for power and volume as well as a spot to tap for easily connecting smartphones.

Samsung’s presence at CES has long been one characterized by its enormity. And we’re not just referring to the monumental assemblage of televisions they build each year to greet CES attendees – currently now delivered in 4K and 8K resolutions, and powered by MicroLEDs and Neo QLED display technologies – but also the vast breadth of products Samsung brings each January to flex their one-stop-shop home technologies muscles. To be honest, it could be mistaken for a spotlight lamp, or perhaps even an oversized Apple iSight, if you were around for that barrel-shaped webcam ahead of its time.
Instead, The Freestyle is reflective of a generation used to taking and consuming content wherever they go. Typically this task is assigned to a phone or tablet, but even the streaming generation regularly enjoys watching content at dimensions beyond a tablet screen. Thus, Samsung has crammed in the aforementioned 1080p projection system and paired it with a built-in 360-degree dual passive radiator speaker as an all-in-one entertainment system. Partnered with an adjustable cradle stand, The Freestyle can display pictures, videos, video games, or simply be used as one pricey mood lamp with the near-simplicity of a desk lamp.

CES 2022 has passed, and one of the more popular devices that came out of the event was the Samsung The Freestyle. We had the opportunity to do a first look review of this new projector, and we awarded it a Best of CES 2022 award.
The Freestyle caught a lot of eyes and a lot of interest, and according to the company, it has gotten a significant response for pre-ordering this new projector. “The response from consumers has been so overwhelmingly positive that The Freestyle pre-order sales have exceeded the limited quantities Samsung had projected.” This has resulted in Samsung pausing pre-orders for now. The reason given for the pause is so that everyone who wants one can still take advantage of the special offer, including the case.

Samsung’s new barrel-shaped Freestyle projector was just announced at CES. The 1080p projector goes up for preorder today for $899. What matters more than its spec sheet, according to Samsung, is that this highly portable and swiveling visual lightshow with integrated speaker and voice control is coming to support your carefree “lifestyle” and nomadic “experiences.”

How can I be certain of this? Because when I, a curmudgeonly old, showed the Freestyle to my 13-year-old daughter under strict embargo, her first reaction was, and I quote: “I want that. A fake window on my wall would be so pretty.” A sampling of one teen is surely correct.
The 1.83 pound (0.83kg) LED projector is capable of producing an auto-focused, auto-leveled, and auto-keystoned image at sizes from 30 to 100 inches. Rated for 550 lumens, it’s not very bright which is typical for pico-style projectors, so you’ll need a very dark room for the best image quality.

The translucent lens cap can be used to create “mood lighting” that can be synced with whatever audio is playing. It also features a 360-degree five watt speaker, and a far-field mic array (for “Hi Bixby” or Alexa voice controls) that looks like it can be toggled on and off via a switch. If you look closely at the images you’ll also see one HDMI and one USB-C jack, and what looks like touch controls for power, volume, and something else encircling the lens.

The Freestyle also runs Tizen to provide the same software experience as Samsung’s smart TVs, so you’ll be pretty well set on app selection, including Netflix which many Android TV-based all-in-one projectors don’t support.
