For new players wanting to get better at League of Legends, there are quite a few terms that might seem new to them, one of which is all the talk about League of Legends ranks. What is the ranking system that Riot Games created in League of Legends and how do you even climb between the different tiers in League of Legends – also known as elo hell? That’s what we’re going to be exploring today.
What is League of Legends Ranked?
Ranked refers to the LoL ranking system in which players can choose to play. In this system, players who have a LoL account at level 30 are able to choose to play ranked matches, which will determine players’ ranked tier.
There are different game modes in League of Legends, like ARAM, normals and ranked. Players who reach level 30 in League of Legends unlock ranked mode where they are able to earn LP through ranked games.
Players who choose to play normal games or ARAM won’t have their LoL ranks affected.
What Ranks Exist in League of Legends?
There are nine ranks that currently exist in League of Legends. Each rank is represented by a specific name and icon. This way LoL players are able to differentiate their skill level with ease since those in the same rank and tier should have similar proficiency in LoL.
These are the nine ranks that currently exist in League of Legends:
Iron
Bronze
Silver
Gold

OW DO RANKS WORK IN LEAGUE OF LEGENDS?
The ranking system in League of Legends includes nine tiers, each split into four divisions, with four being the lowest in that tier and one being the highest.
You progress through each division and tier by earning League Points (LP) for games that your team win. The exact amount of points is determined by your Matchmaking Rating (MMR). If you’re victorious against a team with a higher MMR than yours, you will gain more LP than if you were to beat a team with a lower MMR than yours.
You can also lose LP for games that you fail to win or for games that you rage quit. Again, the amount of LP you lose depends on the MMR of you and your opponent.
At the end of each ranked season, your tier and division will be locked in as your official rank for that season.
You will then gain in-game rewards at the end of each season, such as special skins. The amount and quality of rewards you earn will increase depending on what tier you finished in.
The current ranked season, Season 11, kicked off on January 8, 2021. Seasons last nearly a year and is divided into three splits, which each last three months.

What is ranked and how do you unlock it?
Ranked is League’s competitive game mode that pits teams of five players against each other. It’s the competitive equivalent of the Summoner’s Rift normal draft mode.
Ranked is only available to players who have reached level 30 and own at least 20 different champions. You can keep leveling after 30 to get more rewards, however.
When a player first plays ranked, they’ll be put into one of 10 placement games to determine their initial rank, just like at the beginning of every new ranked season. The more games you win during your placements, the better chances you have of starting in a rank like Silver or Gold.
You’ll start your placement games with a rank and will be able to see your provisional rank go up as you win your placement matches, which will give you an idea of where you’ll end once you finish all 10 games. You’ll also be able to see your LP gains during placements.
How do you climb divisions and ranks?
Players must win a majority of their games to advance to the next division. Promotion series within certain ranks, like Bronze III to II, were best-of-three series. From one rank to the next, such as Silver I to Gold IV, promotion series are a best-of-five instead. If you have a good win rate, the system will allow you to skip promotions or divisions to ensure that you reach your real rank as fast as possible.
If a player doesn’t win the required number of games to get promoted, then they’ll need to get back to 100 LP to try again.
If a player continuously loses games, they also run the risk of eventually dropping back down to zero LP. In this case, a player could be demoted unless they win some matches again.
TIPS TO PERFORM BETTER IN LEAGUE OF LEGENDS RANKS
Here are some tips which should help players make their ranked climb faster:
Vision- Keeping constant vision on the enemy is of utmost importance in League of Legends. All the vision wards are free to use except the purchasable control wards. Having the information in the river and enemy jungle would allow players to make informed decisions in the matches. Moreover, apart from using the regular wards purchase different wards according to the state of the match.
Example: Purchase controls wards and sweeper lens for Teemo and more.
Champion Pool- Many players, are rigid in League of Legends; therefore; it could be one of the reasons why certain players don’t rank up often in their ranked matches. Players should have a diverse pool of champions divided into each role or lanes. Every player should have at least six different characters mastered in the game to climb up easier in the game. Many times, players are auto-filled into positions they wouldn’t usually play. Instead of dodging the matches, having a wide variety of champions under the belt could go a long way in pushing solo queue ranks.
Itemisation- League of Legends had a complete overhaul of item changes and players are developing new meta and experimenting with new strategies in the preseason. Therefore, if you want to climb the ranked ladder as Season 11 is live in the game, you have to start experimenting with the new item changes in the game and have in-depth knowledge of all the new items especially the Mythic items.
CSing- One of the most fundamental concepts of League of Legends Ranks is to farm minions in the game to earn gold and spend it on powerful items. Now, different champions have different base attack speed and damage, which makes it difficult for players to last hit minions and earn the gold. Therefore, players need to practice with champions in normal queue matches to have a strong grasp on farming CS in the game. Moreover, they can also implement freezing and pushing waves to snowball leads or play it safe from the enemy jungle.
The ranking system in League of Legends includes nine tiers, each split into four divisions, with four being the lowest in that tier and one being the highest. You progress through each division and tier by earning League Points (LP) for games that your team win.
The talented streamer gave his thoughts after reaching the apex in every position. Popular League of Legends streamer Tyler1 has finally hit Challenger rank in each role, a feat reserved for players of a different caliber.
Getting S rated means you did your best in the game and probably performed the best on your team as well, which translates into more honors from your teammates and faster champion mastery progress. S is critical to getting all the cosmetic upgrades in League of Legends that all the players want, and it’s no easy task.
Any ranked armor features are obtained by staying within these tiers for each split of the season. Each tier from Bronze to Diamond is divided into five divisions, depicted by a roman numeral between V (5 being the lowest) and I (1 being the highest).
