Apple recently dropped two new true wireless earbuds: the $199 Beats Fit Pro and the $175 AirPods 3.

Both borrow from the $249 AirPods Pro quite a bit, with the Fit Pro packing active noise cancellation and a Transparency mode and the AirPods 3 borrowing the Pro’s overall look and some of their key features. So which of these more affordable alternatives is for you?

The Beats Fit Pro and AirPods 3 both do a lot of things well, from the former’s secure and workout-friendly design to the latter’s Adaptive EQ and Spatial Audio support. But after extensive testing, one of these buds emerged as the clear standout for most people. Here’s how Apple’s latest earbuds stack up.

Great sound and features for the price
The AirPods 3 are the cheaper of Apple’s new earbuds, and deliver strong sound quality and features for the price.

The Beats Fit Pro and AirPods 3 both feel pretty good to wear, but we prefer the softer, more secure fit that the latest Beats buds offer.

The Fit Pro’s rubberized wingtip design and soft silicone ear tips provide a fit that feels snug even when you’re exercising (note that both of these buds are IPX4-rated to handle sweat or water).

The Beats Fit Pro also include three sets of swappable ear tips in the box, giving you some options for finding the right fit. The AirPods 3 have a more open, one-size-fits-all design by comparison, and while they’re still fairly comfortable, we think the Fit Pro are cozier.

You want active noise cancellation and Transparency mode
The Beats Fit Pro are basically a sporty version of the AirPods Pro, which means that you get active noise cancellation for blocking out unwanted sounds as well as a Transparency mode for amplifying external audio. Both of these features worked well in our testing, and more crucially, you won’t find them on AirPods 3.

If you can live without those two features, the AirPods 3 and Beats Fit Pro have most of the same Apple-centric benefits. They’ll both pair to your Apple devices instantaneously, offer Spatial Audio for immersive 360-degree sound and feature an Adaptive EQ for optimizing your music on the fly. They’re also similarly impressive when it comes to audio quality, with the AirPods 3 offering slightly more prominent bass and the Beats Fit Pro delivering a more balanced, wider soundstage. But if you want to drown out the outside world while you’re working (or working out), you should go with the Beats.

What is the difference between Beats and Powerbeats?

The Beats Powerbeats Pro provide 10.52 hours of playback on a single charge, while the Beats Powerbeats last just shy of 18 hours.

Although the Powerbeats have the better standalone playtime, the Beats Powerbeats Pro are allotted an additional 24 hours of on-the-go battery life from the massive charging case.

Choosing between the Beats Powerbeats Pro and the Beats Powerbeats is like asking someone if they prefer peaches or nectarines. In both instances, the genetics are essentially identical with just a few minor variances. In today’s breakdown, we’re pitting the influential company against itself; each headset has its place, but which is the absolute best for you?

Aside from the rounded cable that joins the Beats Powerbeats housings, dubbing them as wireless rather than true wireless, the headsets in question are practically indistinguishable. Both the Powerbeats and Powerbeats Pro ear hooks are easy to adjust for a secure fit no matter the size of your ears. Beats used angled nozzles that conform to the ear canal for a comfortable fit, and better isolation than 90° nozzles provide.
The Powerbeats Pro includes a charging case, which is the norm for all true wireless earbuds; this serves as a way to store the earbuds and tops them up when not in use. The case doesn’t support wireless induction charging and uses the same Lightning input as the lower-tier wireless earbuds. While the case is useful, it’s very bulky and takes away from the portability factor that entices most consumers. On the other hand, the Beats Powerbeats includes a drawstring carrying pouch. It isn’t very protective, but it’s more portable and keeps the cable from getting tangled.

Apple’s H1 chip is integrated into both Beats headphones, so regardless of which Powerbeats you get, you’re afforded all the same benefits like optimal power efficiency, easy iOS device switching, hands-free Siri access, and more. Android users aren’t granted the same features, as these are limited to iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Onboard controls and virtual assistant access

Beats’ premium and economical Powerbeats both rely on buttons to control playback, accept or reject calls, and adjust volume. With the Beats Powerbeats Pro, both “b” logos are functional buttons, but for the Powerbeats, only the right panel is operational. You may access your virtual assistant by a press-and-hold gesture of the multifunction button on either headset, or you can use your voice for direct Siri access.
The true wireless model supports automatic ear detection, whereas the Powerbeats do not. Seeing as the former is significantly more expensive than the latter, it makes sense that Beats omitted some features. While it’s nice to have auto pause/play functionality, some buyers feel it’s even nicer to have an extra $50 lining their wallets.
This round is a real toss-up, but the additional multifunction button on the Pro model alongside the true wireless benefits, make this round a win for the Powerbeats Pro.

I’ll lay it right out there: The degree to which you’ll like the Powerbeats Pro, Beats’ first true wireless earphones, will depend largely on how well they fit your ears. If you get a comfortable, snug fit with a tight seal from one of the four different sized included silicon tips, you’ll probably love these headphones and feel OK about dropping $200 on them. End up with something less than that and you may question their worth.

The Good

The Powerbeats Pro have better sound and battery life than the AirPods and will stay on your ears securely. They offer all the same basic conveniences of the 2019 AirPods, including fast pairing, rock-solid wireless connectivity and always-on Siri voice-recognition for iOS users. Phone call quality is excellent. Physical buttons for music playback control will appeal to Android users.

The Bad

The Powerbeats Pro are more expensive than AirPods. The charging case isn’t pocket-friendly, nor does it offer wireless charging. The headphones deliver some treble push, and may not fit all ears perfectly.

I came close to getting a great fit. I would rate it between a B+ and A-. The issue wasn’t one of security; I never had to worry about them falling off. With a few tweaks to the iconic earhooks — they’re bendable — the Powerbeats Pros were essentially clipped onto my ears. I shot some hoops with them on and I suspect that they’d stay on even if I was capable of, say, a 360-degree slam dunk. (Alas, I am not.)

My little problem: Even with the largest ear tips (yes, they’re large but not quite large enough), my ear canal wasn’t completely sealed off, so more ambient noise leaked in than I would have liked and sound quality was impacted in noisier environments — like on the subway or the streets of New York. I was in the minority, however. I had CNET colleagues who were able to get a tight seal and not only really liked the fit but were immediately impressed with the sound.
