Pokimane Early life
Imane Anys, better known as Pokimane, was born in Morocco on May 14, 1996. Her parents were academics who emigrated to Quebec, Canada when she was four years old. Growing up in St. Catharines, Ontario, Pokimane’s older brother Mo introduced her to video games, including the Game Boy, Nintendo DS, and Wii. In middle school, she started playing massively multiplayer online games such as MapleStory and Endless Online, where she focused on customization and socializing with other players.
Pokimane went on to study chemical engineering at McMaster University, but later dropped out to pursue her streaming career full-time. She began streaming on Twitch in 2013 and gained popularity for her streams of League of Legends gameplay. Today, she is one of the most popular Twitch streamers, known for her engaging personality and skill at a variety of games.
Pokimane Career
Pokimane created her Twitch account in June 2013 and began streaming later that year with a $250 PC she bought off a classified website. She gained popularity on Twitch for her streams of League of Legends gameplay and her engaging personality, and in 2017, she was named the Best Twitch Streamer of the year by the Shorty Awards. She has also streamed gameplay and commentary of Fortnite and has been directly partnered with Twitch as an ambassador for their TwitchCon event and Twitch Creator Camp.
As of December 2021, Pokimane had over 8.5 million followers on Twitch, making her the 9th most followed user on the platform. She was also named a featured honoree in the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 under the category of “Games,” citing her prominence as the largest female streamer on Twitch and as one of the founders of OfflineTV.
In January 2022, Pokimane’s Twitch account was temporarily suspended following a DMCA claim from ViacomCBS, and later in the month, her stream was raided by viewers of another streamer, JiDion. She criticized streamer Ninja’s response to the incident, particularly his use of a derogatory term. In February 2022, Pokimane re-signed with Twitch.

Pokimane and Ninja
The Drama Between Pokimane and Ninja Is Proving to Be Irresistible for Fans.
Online streamer Pokimane recently called out fellow streamer Ninja online, but how did the beef between the two of them actually start? The beef between Pokimane and Ninja seems to have started with a tweet from Ninja in January 2022, in which he criticized streamers who accept donations from young viewers. Although he did not mention Pokimane or any other streamer by name, his comments were seen by some as a veiled reference to Pokimane, who had recently received a $5,000 donation from a 12-year-old viewer during one of her streams.
Pokimane responded to Ninja’s tweet with a series of tweets of her own, defending her decision to accept donations from young viewers and arguing that it is ultimately the responsibility of parents to monitor their children’s online activities.
The debate between the two streamers quickly spilled over onto social media, with fans taking sides and weighing in on the issue. Some fans have criticized Ninja for his comments, arguing that he was unfairly targeting Pokimane and other streamers who accept donations from young viewers. Others have supported Ninja, arguing that streamers have a responsibility to set a good example for their young viewers and should not accept donations from children.
Throughout the debate, both Pokimane and Ninja have continued to stream and interact with their fans, and it remains to be seen whether the beef between them will die down or continue to divide the community.
