Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Sent a Message With Her First Met Gala Appearance
AOC Met Gala
For her first appearance at the Met gala, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had to make a political statement.
It was only right. And since she was at fashion’s glitziest night, surrounded by some of the most powerful and famous people in the world, what better medium to get her message out about taxing the rich than, well, to have it written in red on her dress? The Democratic socialist congresswoman wore a white gown by Brother Vellies, splashed with the political slogan across the back (the bottom curve of the “C” in “rich” nicely mirrored the tulle hem).
“We can never get too comfortable in our seats at the table once they’ve been given,” Aurora James, founder and creative director of Brother Vellies and the founder of the 15 Percent Pledge says. “We must always continue to push ourselves, push our colleagues, push the culture, and push the country forward. Fashion is changing; America is changing. And as far as this theme goes, I think Alexandria and I are a great embodiment of the language fashion needs to consider adding to the general lexicon as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and empowered future.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , also known by her initials AOC
is an American politician and activist. She has served as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district since 2019, as a member of the Democratic Party. The district includes the eastern part of the Bronx, portions of north-central Queens, and Rikers Island in New York City.
Ocasio-Cortez drew national recognition when she won the Democratic Party’s primary election for New York’s 14th congressional district on June 26, 2018. She defeated Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, in what was widely seen as the biggest upset victory in the 2018 midterm election primaries.
She was reelected in the 2020 election, defeating John Cummings.

Examining the Controversy Over AOC’s Met Gala Dress
AOC hit with ethics complaint over Met Gala attendance
American Accountability Foundation asks for probe into whether Ocasio-Cortez accepted ‘impermissible gift’
The American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a conservative watchdog group, has filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over her attendance at the lavish Met Gala in New York City Monday night.
Ocasio-Cortez sparked a social media firestorm after she wore a white dress with the slogan “tax the rich” at the star-studded event, where tickets go for at least $30,000 each.
The congresswoman responded to critics “flying off the handle” over her attendance, explaining in a tweet that “New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public. I was one of several in attendance in this evening.”
A spokesperson for the Met said Ocasio-Cortez was a “guest of the museum.”
The AAF’s complaint, obtained by Fox News, asks the Office of Congressional Ethics to “immediately open an investigation” into Ocasio-Cortez and whether she accepted an “impermissible gift” to attend the gala or violated any campaign finance laws.
“Without prompt investigation and enforcement of Congressional Rules, the American people are likely to lose faith in the ability of Congress to police its members,” the complaint says.
Actor Michael Rapaport calls out AOC over Met Gala dress
AOC has repeatedly called for increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans
Michael Rapaport, the actor, offered sharp criticism for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for wearing a sleek white dress with “Tax The Rich” splashed in red on the back as she arrived at the uber-swanky Met Gala Monday night.
Tickets for the famed event can fetch at least $30,000 and it attracts some of the most influential players in fashion, movies and culture. Rapaport seemed to take particular offense at a politician—who he said should be a “public servant”—hobnobbing with the glitterati.
AOC ripped for attending elite Met Gala in ‘Tax the Rich’ dress
Self-proclaimed “socialist” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed early Tuesday that it was her “responsibility” to attend the Met Gala — as she was roundly ripped for wearing a couture “Tax the Rich” dress to the elite bash, where tickets cost at least $30,000.
The mask-less Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) turned heads as she joined other left-wing leaders like Mayor Bill de Blasio at the exclusive New York bash late Monday — passing by a Black Lives Matter protest against the event taking place outside.
She justified wearing her dress by New York-based Aurora James — whom she hailed as a “sustainably focused, Black woman immigrant designer” — claiming they were there to “kick open the doors at the Met.”
“And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public,” she tweeted early Tuesday. “I was one of several in attendance in this evening,” she noted defensively.
Some online suggested that her defensive message was a sign that she “already knew the optics on this were gonna be really bad” — with her attendance quickly getting a dressing down online.
“What makes @AOC a bigger fraud: The ‘tax the rich’ dress while she’s hanging out with a bunch of wealthy leftwing elites or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian mask Karens in the country?” Donald Trump Jr. asked.
“‘Tax the Rich’ … But first I’m gonna go have the time of my life partying with them all at the most extravagant over the top party of the year that is essentially a celebration of richness,” Barstool Sports president Dave Portnoy tweeted sarcastically.
