Jackson first came to fame starring in films like “Women in Love” in 1969 and “A Touch of Class” in 1973, for which she won Oscars for best actress. She later segued into political life and was elected to Parliament as a Labour Party lawmaker in 1992. She served as an MP for 23 years until stepping down at age 80 in 2015.

She was known within Parliament for her forthright style. She served as junior transport minister from 1997 to 1999 and unsuccessfully ran for London mayor in 2000, but never achieved high office.

At various times, Jackson clashed with Prime Ministers Tony Blair over the Iraq War and Margaret Thatcher after her death over whether the former prime minister had merit as a role model for women.

In her later years, Jackson returned to acting on stage, winning a Tony Award in 2018 for “Three Tall Women.” Her most recent film, “The Great Escaper,” is still in post-production.

Many figures from British politics and film expressed admiration for Jackson and her accomplishments spanning both the arts and public service. Jackson leaves a remarkable legacy as an actress, politician and pioneer for women in both fields.
