Elton John announces new album recorded in lockdown with Stevie Wonder, Dua Lipa among other A-listers
Elton John is releasing an album of collaborations with artistes from several generations and genres, including Nicki Minaj, Young Thug, Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X, Stevie Nicks and Stevie Wonder.
The Lockdown Sessions, a collection of 16 songs featuring John with artistes from Dua Lipa to the late Glen Campbell, will be released on October 22 by EMI Universal, the label announced Wednesday.
The pandemic project was spurred by John having to pause his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in March 2020 and his Apple Music talk show Rocket Hour, through which he got to know many of the artistes he would work with.
The tracks were recorded with the artistes remote from each other in some cases, and together, with safety precautions, in others.
John said it pushed him into very unfamiliar musical territory, dipping into hip hop, country and electronic dance music, sometimes in the same song.
“I realised there was something weirdly familiar about working like this,” he said in a statement announcing the album. “At the start of my career, in the late ‘60s, I worked as a session musician. Working with different artistes during lockdown reminded me of that. I’d come full circle: I was a session musician again. And it was still a blast.”
The opening track with Dua Lipa, Cold Heart (PNAU Remix), was released earlier this month.
John takes the lead on some of the tracks, including duets with Brandi Carlile and Eddie Vedder, and is a featured guest on others, including previously released recordings with Rina Sawayama and Surfaces.
Elton John unveils ‘Lockdown Sessions’ collab album with Dua Lipa, Eddie Vedder, Stevie Wonder, more
Elton John has announced the forthcoming release of “The Lockdown Sessions,” an album of collaborations recorded remotely over the last 18 months, out Oct. 22, featuring more than 20 collaborators, including Dua Lipa, Brandi Carlile, Charlie Puth, Eddie Vedder, Gorillaz, Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Rina Sawayama, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder, Years & Years, Young Thug, and others — including an apparently posthumous duet with country legend Glen Campbell.
“In March 2020 Elton was forced to pause his record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour due to the unfolding COVID pandemic,” the announcement reads.
“As the world began to shut down, different projects presented themselves with artists Elton had enjoyed getting to know through his Apple Music show, ‘Rocket Hour.’ This was the beginning of one of Elton’s boldest and most interesting records to date that he has billed ‘The Lockdown Sessions.’”
“This album saw Elton coming full circle and returning to his roots as a session musician,” it continues. “While it was no easy feat recording during a pandemic, a completely new way of working for Elton, he leaned into the challenge with some magnificent results.”
John said, “The last thing I expected to do during lockdown was make an album. But as the pandemic went on, one-off projects kept cropping up. Some of the recording sessions had to be done remotely, via Zoom, which I’d obviously never done before. Some of the sessions were recorded under very stringent safety regulations: working with another artist, but separated by glass screens. But all the tracks I worked on were really interesting and diverse, stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new territory.”

In July it was announced Elton had been forced to postpone a selection of dates from his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour yet again, due to Covid-19.
Fans in Germany who had booked tickets for September will have to wait until as far as 2023 to see the pop icon live.
The tour, which began in 2018 and is slated to include 309 shows, was due to get back-on-track in Berlin before heading to Munich, Hamburg, Mannheim, and Cologne.
But Sir Elton confirmed the delay online and said: ‘Hello again everyone. As we begin to exit this terrible global pandemic, we are all faced with regulations and restrictions that we must adhere to.
‘As such it has been necessary to once again review my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour and make some difficult decisions.
‘I hope you can appreciate that these decisions are not ones we have taken lightly, but with due consideration for the situation in each country and the safety of our fans and everyone involved with this amazing show.
‘Based on the information we have received, venues in Germany will not be allowed to reopen to 100% capacity in the near future, and as we have sold 100% of the tickets to my show we have taken the decision to reschedule.
‘We cannot wait to finally see you all again and thank you for all your love and support. Until we see you, please stay safe and healthy. Elton John.’
