US Grand Prix LIVE: F1 race result and reaction tonight as Max Verstappen holds off Lewis Hamilton to win

A thrilling Formula 1 title race between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen continued this evening as the United States Grand Prix played out in Austin, Texas.

Verstappen started in pole position at the Circuit of the Americas, with rival Hamilton joining him in the front row. Dutchman Verstappen entered the race leading the Briton by six points in the drivers’ standings and having reclaimed top spot in the championship battle at this month’s Turkish GP, and the Red Bull driver was able to take another step towards his first F1 title by emerging victorious here.

Although Verstappen was overtaken by Hamilton almost immediately after lights out, he regained first place when the Mercedes man made his first pit stop of the day. That moment even saw Verstappen gain a six-second lead on the defending champion, who spent the rest of the race trying to close down his rival. Hamilton could not erase the gap, however, as Verstappen crossed the line first to double his points advantage over the seven-time title-winner to 12 points with five races left this season. Hamilton came second, while Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez rounded out the podium places.

Verstappen felt unsure aggressive strategy beat Hamilton for US GP win

Max Verstappen felt unsure Red Bull’s aggressive strategy would be enough to win him the United States Grand Prix as he extended his Formula 1 championship lead in Austin.

Verstappen lost the lead from F1 title rival Lewis Hamilton at the start, but was able to get back in front after undercutting at the first round of pit stops, coming in at the end of lap 10.

Mercedes pitted Hamilton three laps later, and while he was able to close through the second stint thanks to his tyre advantage, Red Bull reacted first and brought Verstappen in for a second time on lap 29.

It left Verstappen with a 27-lap stint to complete to the finish, and he looked at risk of losing the win when Hamilton began to catch at a rate of one second per lap after making his final stop, cutting an eight-second gap down to less than two.

But after being instructed to look after his rear tyres so he could get a good exit out of the slower corners and into DRS zones, Verstappen managed to stabilise the gap, eventually crossing the line 1.3 seconds clear of Hamilton.

“We lost out at the start, so we had to try and do something else,” Verstappen explained in parc ferme after the race.

“But the tyre wear is quite high around this track, so we did go aggressive.

“I was not sure it was going to work, but yeah, the last few laps were fun. A bit sideways through the high speed corners, but super happy of course to hang on.”

Red Bull F1 Racing has come a long way in 2021 as they are giving Mercedes a run for their money with their Championship-worthy car. After spending years trying to come up with the technology to match the mighty Silver Arrows, Red Bull is now locked up in a championship fight with them.

And there is one man who must be acknowledged when it comes to Red Bull trying to usurp the defending champions in this season, Christian Horner.

In a recent interview, the Red Bull Team Principal revealed candid details about whom he admires in the sport and why. And he also talked about his newfound popularity amongst the non-F1-watching people due to the Netflix series ‘Drive to Survive’.
Drive to Survive has made F1 a mainstream sports

The Netflix docuseries ‘Drive to Survive’ has made Formula 1, a seemingly elite sport that only a select few people followed earnestly, an international phenomenon. In the US, the FIA had been trying to increase the popularity of the sport since forever, but their efforts were futile. The Americans are more used to watching NASCAR and IndyCar but DTS made sure they get interested in F1 after watching the insider stories of the people in the paddocks.

Speaking of the docuseries, the interviewer asked Horner, “The interview wouldn’t be complete unless you were asked about “Drive to Survive,” a show that has brought a lot of popularity to Formula One. You’ve become a central figure in the series and your popularity has risen too. How has “Drive to Survive” impacted you behind just what happens at the track?”

Horner, taking a witty approach for answering the question, said, “It means when we go to a restaurant it’s not just my wife (Geri Halliwell) that gets approached these days.”
