Hailee Steinfeld of ‘Hawkeye’ : the next big star of the Marvel universe. Avenger’s dark past comes back to haunt him

Hailee Steinfeld of ‘Hawkeye’ could become the next big star of the Marvel universe

Hailee Steinfeld had no idea how much one color was about to take over her new superhero life.

Purple has become her second skin during the production and promotion of her highly anticipated series “Hawkeye.”

Steinfeld kept seeing the color splashed across the “thousands” of pages she read of the Hawkeye comics, which she enjoyed so much she keeps them on display at her home.

Both her character, Kate Bishop, and Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, have purple suits — and it was obvious her chats with the wardrobe department on “Hawkeye” would have a singular focus.

“It’s so funny because, I of course obviously knew about the purple walking into this … but I guess maybe I didn’t. Because it has become my world,” Steinfeld told The Washington Post. “But I’m not mad about it. I do love the color purple.”

That’s probably a good thing, because Steinfeld as Bishop just might be the next big thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In “Hawkeye,” which debuts Wednesday on Disney Plus, she stars as a master archer and a worshiper of Renner’s Barton, who wields his own bow and arrow and would much rather spend the holidays vacationing with his family in New York than be avenging anything in his post-Thanos life.

This six-episode series is Steinfeld’s MCU origin story, and although she plays the adulating sidekick, she will probably see her status rise — and could potentially even take on the Hawkeye title herself.

For Steinfeld, the series was a chance to be a Hawkeye apprentice in front of the camera and behind it.

The latest Disney+ entry into the Marvel universe features muddy action sequences but promising comedic performances from its leads

Hawkeye today became the latest Disney+ entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2 recap: Avenger’s dark past comes back to haunt him

Clint Barton meets his would-be apprentice, but New York City’s criminals are out for blood.

With the multiversal madness of Loki and What If… ? in our rearview mirrors, it’s time for an Avenger to take center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first two episodes of Hawkeye hit Disney Plus on Wednesday, whisking us off on a New York City adventure with a pair of extraordinarily capable archers.

In the midst of the holiday season following the events of Avengers: Endgame and the return of billions of vanished people after a five-year absence, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) is suffering the emotional fallout of losing his best bud Black Widow. Little does he know that he’s about to get a new ally in Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), even if their relationship has a rocky start.

Let’s follow their arrows straight into SPOILER territory.

Got ’em, bro

Kate and Clint form a tentative partnership as Clint tries to recover his Ronin gear, but the second episode ends with them captured by the Tracksuit Mafia. The goons gleefully bring news of their success to their mysterious boss Maya Lopez, aka Echo (Alaqua Cox), as she hangs out in a room full of speakers.

“We have… them both. We have them both,” her goon says in a deliberate manner, before she casually dismisses him.
This scene subtly hints at Maya’s deafness — she touches the speakers to feel the vibrations — but she possesses an ability that lets her go toe-to-toe with anyone in the MCU.

In the comics, she has “photographic reflexes” — meaning she can perfectly mimic another person’s movements (kinda like Taskmaster, who showed up in Black Widow). In her first appearance back in 1999, she became a concert-level pianist by watching someone play and has gained awesome martial arts and acrobatics skills by viewing recordings of fights.

Despite showing up in a villainous capacity here, she’s unlikely to stay a baddy. She’s getting her own Disney Plus show sometime in the future, and her comics counterpart started out as Daredevil villain and went on to become a member of the Avengers.

That comics history might also hint at another villain in the shadows — a character fans of the Netflix Marvel shows will be familiar with.

Jack From Hawkeye Had A Tense Relationship With Clint Barton In The Comics

The latest Disney+ series in the MCU roster introduces fans to Clint Barton’s (Jeremy Renner) protégé Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a young and spunky 22-year-old eager to take over his mantle as Hawkeye.

Though Clint is technically retired from the Avengers when Hawkeye picks up, he teams with Kate after spotting her taking down bad guys in his infamous old Ronin outfit. Together, they have to confront several people from his past — likely including Jack Duquesne, the fiancé of Kate’s mom.

In the Marvel comics, Jack was a mentor to Clint. Per CBR, he was created by Don Heck and Stan Lee in 1965 and introduced as a Frenchman who grew up in the Southeast Asian nation of Siancong. Like Kate and Clint, he has no superhuman powers, but he is an Olympic-level athlete and skilled swordsman with remarkable reflexes and combat skills.

While in Siancong, Jack joined the natives’ rebellion against their European rulers. But after learning the rebels’ leader killed his father, he grew disillusioned and disappeared. Years later, he resurfaced and joined the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders, where he met Clint — then a young runaway — and taught him how to wield bladed weaponry. (Though Clint is known for his prowess with a bow and arrow, he notably spent the beginning of Endgame fighting with a sword).

Jack has a reputation for being cunning and putting his interests above everyone else’s. During his time in the carnival, he turned to gambling, and eventually robbed the carnival’s paymaster in order to settle his gambling debts. When Clint attempted to turn him in, Jack nearly killed him, but Clint was rescued by Trick Shot, who’d taught him his archery skills. Jack fled and used his swordplay act to become the supervillain the Swordsman.

‘Hawkeye’ Review: Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld-Led Show Is a Charming Holiday Tale Worth the Wait

Hawkeye has always been a sort of control group for the Avengers. While the team may have super soldiers, wizards, iron men, and a talking tree, Hawkeye has a bow and arrow. Sure, he’s really good at archery, but still. Back in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we saw how Cliff Barton (Jeremy Renner) was uncertain about how integral he was to the team, and even Matt Fraction’s “My Life as a Weapon” comic begins with Hawkeye talking about how he’s just “fighting with a stick and a string from the Paleolithic era.” Part of his story is that he’s just a normal guy fighting alongside gods, and while that can be interesting in comic books, so far in the MCU, he’s often felt like a strange addition. Barton aptly summed up his position in the MCU in Age of Ultron when he said “the city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense.”
