Covid-19 Omicron Variant has claimed another life in Gloucestershire as Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces an advanced booster jab rollout.

Plans to offer the jab to all eligible adults by the end of January are moved forward a month as cases of the variant increase rapidly.

The latest government figures from the last 24-hour period show that a person in the Forest of Dean has died within 28 days of a first positive coronavirus test.

It brings the total number of deaths in the county to 1,029 since the pandemic began.

This death comes as the Prime Minister announced that everyone aged over 18 who has had two coronavirus vaccine doses is now eligible to book a third booster jab to halt the spread of the new, potentially more dangerous, variant.

Gloucestershire recorded 381 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, including 80 in Gloucester, 78 in Cheltenham, and 64 in Tewkesbury.

Stroud saw 66 new cases, while there were 49 positive tests in the Forest of Dean and 44 in the Cotswolds.

It brings the total number of recorded cases in the county since the pandemic started to 84,768.

Meanwhile, across the United Kingdom, 48,854 new positive cases were recorded, brining the total since the pandemic began to 10,819,515.

And 52 new people have died with the virus in the last 24 hours on record, bringing the total number of nationwide deaths to 146,439.

Booster jabs will be offered to everyone over 18 in England from this week, the PM has announced, as he declared an “Omicron emergency”.

“No one should be in any doubt, there is a tidal wave of Omicron coming,” Boris Johnson said on Sunday.

A new target has been set to offer boosters to all adults who want one by the end of the month, he said.

Ten people in England are in hospital with Omicron, Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed on Monday.

Some medical appointments are to be postponed to focus on boosters.

Mr Johnson gave his update in a TV statement on Sunday evening, just hours after the UK’s Covid alert level was raised to four due to the spread of the new Omicron virus variant.

Level four means a high or rising level of transmission – the last time the UK was at this level was in May.

People have been told to work from home from Monday “if they can”, as part of the UK government’s introduction of Plan B measures.

COVID booster programme

The COVID booster programme was due to be opened to over 30s today, but Mr Johnson said every adult who had their second vaccine at least three months before will now be able to book a booster jab from Wednesday.

Some walk-in centres will be open from today for all adults, on the same day that work-from-home guidance is reintroduced in England as part of the government’s Plan B measures.
