NYC mayor eric adams
An 88-year-old woman compared New York City Mayor Eric Adams to a plantation owner after he implemented a policy requiring city workers to return to the office.
• The woman, Catherine Higgs, wrote a letter to Adams comparing his mandate to the oppression of slaves. She said the mayor’s edict felt like she was “back on the plantation” like when the “plantation owner mandates what slave ‘must do.'”
• Higgs’s family said the comparison went too far and that her comments do not reflect the views of her entire family. They issued an apology to Adams on her behalf, saying Higgs escaped Nazi Germany as a child and has lived a life focused on equality.
• The mayor’s office responded that Adams “respects free speech” but does not agree with the plantation comparison. The office reiterated that the mayor believes it is important for city employees to return to their workplaces.
• Adams has faced resistance to his back-to-office policy from many city unions and workers who prefer working remotely. While some city agencies have returned to the office, others are still only partially back.
