Ed Sheeran Announced as Next ‘SNL’ Musical Guest Amid COVID-19 Diagnosis

Ed Sheeran is heading back to Saturday Night Live.

On Saturday (Oct. 23), the long-running NBC sketch comedy show announced that the English singer-songwriter will appear as musical guest alongside first-time host Kieran Culkin on Nov. 6.

The following day, Sheeran revealed on social media that he’s been diagnosed with COVID-19 and will be self-isolating. As a result, he plans to continue with scheduled interviews and performances virtually.

“Hey guys. Quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “It means that I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances I can from my house. Apologies to anyone I’ve let down. Be safe everyone x.”

Sheeran nor SNL provided further details about the singer’s upcoming appearance on the show. This week, he is also scheduled to appear as a mentor on NBC’s The Voice.

This will mark the Sheeran’s third time serving as musical guest on Saturday Night Live. He first graced the Studio 8H stage in 2014, when he sang his x hits “Don’t” and “Sing.” He returned in 2017 to perform “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill,” from ÷.

Sheeran’s fourth solo studio album, =, is scheduled to arrive out Oct. 29. The new set was preceded by “Bad Habits” and “Shivers,” which have thus far peaked at No. 2 and No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively, with “Bad Habits” having remained in the top 10 since its release.

“It means that I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances I can from my house.

This comes at a busy time for Sheeran, whose upcoming fourth solo studio album releases in less than a week. He’s been doing appearances and interviews in advance of the album out Oct. 29, titled “=” and says that although COVID will force him to cancel in-person performances, he’ll do virtual appearances as much as possible.

The ‘Shivers’ singer releases his new LP ‘=’ on Friday (29.10.21), but his manager Stuart Camp has teased that fans won’t have long to wait before they hear the follow-up.

Speaking about the Grammy-winner’s 2022 tour in support of the record and his future music plans, Stuart is quoted by The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column as saying: “This tour is going to span three or four years, and there will be another record within that cycle, that was always the plan.

“It’s more a question of stopping him putting another record out the week after this one.”

Fans of the flame-haired pop megastar had to wait four years for 2017’s ‘÷’, the follow-up to 2014’s ‘x’, but they won’t have as long a wait this time, as Ed is eager to get his new material out while it’s relevant.

Stuart explained: “The material is there and it won’t be another four-year wait, I can promise you.

“Ed already knows what the next album is. He’s already got a track-listing for it, and I will get that changed over the next 12 months.

“Ed writes so many songs, and he wants to get them out, he doesn’t want them just sitting on his hard drive.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Supermarket Flowers’ singer has been dealt a blow after testing positive for COVID-19.

The 30-year-old star is self-isolating but will continue to perform and give planned interviews from home in Suffolk.

Ed wrote on Instagram over the weekend: “Hey guys, quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines.

The ‘Bad Habits’ hitmaker – whose hit single placed second in the OREO Taste of the Nation Mixtape track-list 2021, a compilation of favourite tracks as voted for by Brits – added: “Apologies to anyone I’ve let down, be safe everyone x (sic)”

Ed had been set to join Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe to play songs from the record and take questions from fans as part of the promotion.

Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran announced on Sunday that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

“Quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines,” the 30-year-old said in a statement posted to his verified Instagram account.
The news come ahead of his highly anticipated fourth studio album titled “=” (pronounced “equals”) which will be unveiled on Friday — four years after he began recording it.

“It means that I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances I can from my house,” Sheeran added on Instagram. “Apologies to anyone I’ve let down.”

Sheeran didn’t mention whether he was vaccinated in his post. But in July he joined James Corden for a segment on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” where the two changed the lyrics of Sheeran’s hit song, “Shape of You,” with phrases about getting a Covid-19 vaccine.
