Montana vs Nebraska-Omaha College Basketball Picks, Best Bets and Odds
Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (1-2) vs. Montana Grizzlies (1-2)
The Line: Montana Grizzlies -12 / Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks +12; Over/Under: +143
The Omaha Mavericks and Montana Grizzlies meet Saturday in college basketball action at the Dahlberg Arena. The Omaha Mavericks look to get back to a .500 record. The Montana Grizzlies also need a win to get to a 2-2 record.
The Omaha Mavericks are averaging 66.7 points on 39.8 percent shooting and allowing 69.7 points on 42.6 percent shooting. Kyle Luedtke is averaging 12 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Frankie Fidler is averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds. Marco Smith is dishing 2.7 assists and Sam’i Roe is grabbing 2.3 rebounds. The Omaha Mavericks are shooting 32.3 percent from beyond the arc and 73.8 percent from the free throw line. The Omaha Mavericks are allowing 39.3 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 32 rebounds per game.
The Montana Grizzlies are averaging 66.7 points on 42 percent shooting and allowing 64 points on 37.1 percent shooting. Brandon Whitney is averaging 13.7 points and 1.3 rebounds, while Derrick Carter-Hollinger is averaging 11 points and 2 rebounds. Josh Bannan is the third double-digit scorer and Josh Vazquez is dishing 1 assist. The Montana Grizzlies are shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc and 76.8 percent from the free throw line. The Montana Grizzlies are allowing 37.1 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 31 rebounds per game.
The Mavericks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Grizzlies are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 home games and 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Mavericks last 6 overall. The over is 4-0 in Grizzlies last 4 home games.
The Montana Grizzlies are the better team here, and it’s hard to back Omaha with confidence given the lack of consistent offense. However, Montana has been terrible against the number dating back to last season, and you shouldn’t be thrilled to lay double-digit chalk. There are better games on a stacked Saturday card, but it’s Omaha or pass for me.
Montana Lady Griz to be tested at North Dakota State Saturday night
Coach Brian Holsinger’s positive outlook and competitive fire seem to be serving him well in his first season as coach of the Montana women’s basketball team.
“We didn’t come here to get one,” he said after his team won its first of two games in a North Dakota swing this week, “we came to get two.”
The Lady Griz (2-1) picked up their first win over an NCAA Division I foe on Thursday, cruising past North Dakota in Grand Forks, 72-51. It probably won’t be as easy when they play at North Dakota State Saturday night at 6 p.m. in Fargo.
While North Dakota was picked to finish ninth in the Summit League, North Dakota State is pegged to finish third behind mid-major powerhouses South Dakota and South Dakota State. The Bison are off to a rocky start at 1-2, but on Wednesday they pushed Northern Iowa — a team ranked No. 25 in the collegeinsider.com mid-major poll — before falling, 76-63.
North Dakota State has lost two in a row since winning at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in its opener. The team will no doubt be doing some soul searching before Saturday’s game.
“There’s an arrogance, maybe, that doesn’t need to be there that we haven’t earned or deserved at all and that may be part of our problem,” NDSU coach Jory Collins told inforum.com after Wednesday’s loss.
The Bison piled up 19 turnovers against Northern Iowa, so that will no doubt be a point of emphasis this weekend. Montana will try to get after it defensively behind Sophia Stiles, a senior guard that has a knack for piling up steals.
North Dakota certainly didn’t get much going offensively against Montana, particularly on the perimeter. The Fighting Hawks (0-3) went 3 for 18 from the arc and were credited with just two assists while turning the ball over 18 times.
Montana had 15 assists on its 30 made field goals.
Griz men’s hoops back in Missoula for start of long homestand
Following an 0-2 road trip, the Montana men’s basketball team is probably happy to be back home.
The road trip for Montana (1-2) was a bit of a mixed bag.
It started with a thumping against a talented team that could find itself dancing in March in the NCAA tournament, Mississippi State. Montana had things close for the first five minutes, then the hosting Bulldogs exploded for a 86-49 win over the Grizzlies.
There was some good, like junior Derrick Carter-Hollinger looking more and more healthy with a team-high 11 points and a pair of triples. But overall it was a rough showing for Montana.
Then, after a not-so-quick trip to Grand Forks, the Grizzlies took on fellow mid-major — and former Big Sky Conference opponent — North Dakota.
The Fighting Hawks and Grizzlies played a tight game most of the way until Montana appeared to pull away, leading by 14 points with under eight minutes on the clock. North Dakota outscored Montana 24-8 over the final stretch to take a 79-77 win despite Brandon Whitney’s career night.
The Grizzlies had it, but couldn’t sustain the lead late.
“The guys showed that it’s there,” DeCuire said on the KGVO postgame show that night. “They have the ability to defend and get stops; we just couldn’t sustain it for the whole 40 (minutes).”
The Grizzlies return home Saturday night to face Nebraska Omaha (1-2) in a battle of teams each looking for their first wins over Division I teams this season. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. following a loaded Saturday that includes plenty of sports across Montana.

NBA Odds: National Basketball Association Betting Lines and Spreads
What Are The Best Online Sportsbooks?
Choose the best NBA Betting Site from our list for all your betting needs.
NBA Betting Odds
The NBA odds in the tables atop of this page allow you to compare which NBA betting sites are offering the best NBA betting lines and NBA odds today. These online sportsbooks offer top money line odds, the best NBA lines on NBA spreads today, and totals for all NBA games.
NBA Point Spread Odds
The point spread is commonly known as just the “spread,” and is the number chosen by sportsbooks that they believe will encourage an equal number of people to wager on the underdog and the favorite. With NBA spreads, the negative value (-7.5) means the team is favored by 7.5 points.
The positive value with NBA spreads (+7.5) indicates the lead given to the underdog before the game begins. In this example, the favored team must win by at least eight points in order to cover the spread. The underdog team can lose by seven points or win, to cover the NBA point spread.
What about the NBA Vegas odds attached to the spread? For the above example, it would look like -7.5 (-110). This indicates how much you have to risk in order to win $100. This value is commonly called the vig or juice. At -110, it translates to risking $110 to win $100.
NBA Moneyline Odds
Mostly used in baseball and hockey betting, moneyline betting on NBA games today has become more popular, especially in betting underdogs. This means that the NBA team you wager on simply needs to win the game, not necessarily win by a specified number of points. Just like a point spread, negative values denote the favorite (-200) and positive ones indicate an underdog (+180).
Example: if you want to bet that -200 favorite, you would wager $200 to win $100. Betting the underdog, you would risk $100 and win $180 if the underdog wins the game straight up. It’s a way to replicate the risk-reward scenario without the benefit of a point spread.
NBA Total Or OVER/UNDER Odds
Known better as the NBA OVER/UNDER, the total is a number set by oddsmakers estimating how many points they feel will be scored in an NBA game by both teams combined. More specifically, it is a number online sports betting sites hope will encourage an equal number of bets on the OVER as on the UNDER.
Regardless of the oddsmaker’s logic, here is what you need to understand: If you wagered UNDER 204.5, you’ll want the combined score of both teams to be less than 204 (example 103+96 = 199 is less than 204.5). If you bet OVER the NBA total, you are hoping for a 110-100 final score which would be 210 total points.
Betting On Futures Odds
Futures odds let basketball betting fans wager long in advance on significant NBA events throughout the NBA schedule. A futures bet in the NBA focuses on the biggest individual and team achievements every year.
For example, you can wager on NBA divisions, the Eastern Conference or Western Conference Champion, bet on certain teams to make the playoffs, or place your money on the winner of the NBA Finals.
Player futures pertain more to predicting recipients of prestigious NBA awards like Most Valuable Player or Rookie of the Year.
