49ers 31, Rams 10: Grades
The 49ers just saved their season.
The real 49ers just stood up. They saved their season with a dramatic 31-10 beatdown of the Los Angeles Rams, and now they’re are 4-5 with the easy part of their schedule coming up. Which means they just might turn their season around.
grades for this win.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO: A.
This probably was the best start of Garoppolo’s career, all things considered. He most likely was one more loss away from getting benched, even though he has played well this season. And all he did was save his job and the 49ers’ season with an extremely efficient performance.
He threw for a mere 182 yards, but he completed 15 of 19 attempts, threw two touchdown passes and committed zero turnovers. Which means he managed the game. Garoppolo is a complementary player, and today he played his role to perfection. The 49ers are hard to beat when they commit to the run and let Garoppolo take a back seat.
RUNNING BACKS: A.
Elijah Mitchell ran the ball a whopping 27 times — the 49ers couldn’t have won if he hadn’t shouldered that load. Jeff Wilson Jr. also added 10 carries. Those two are a terrific tandem.
WIDE RECEIVERS: A.
Deebo Samuel is one of the most unique players in the NFL.
Tonight, he played wide receiver AND running back, and gained 133 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns. What a weapon.
TIGHT ENDS: A.
George Kittle played his best game of the season, as he caught a touchdown pass in the red zone and blocked Von Miller extremely well all night. Good to see he still can play like a dominant force.
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN: A.
They controlled the game on the grounf from the first series and gave up just one sack all night. And that was with backup right tackle Tom Compton playing most of the game after Jaylon Moore left with a knee injury. Compton actually blocked well for the rushing attack.
Star-Studded Rams Have Major Flaws Exposed vs. 49ers in OBJ, Von Miller’s Debut
The Los Angeles Rams may be all-in this season, but Sean McVay and Co. better figure who they actually are before any of their headline-grabbing moves actually matter.
With Monday’s 31-10 loss to the rival San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, the Rams have now dropped two in a row with major flaws running the risk of ruining any potential hope of a Super Bowl run. Make no mistake: The Rams are operating on a different standard after the investments they made with multiple high-profile acquisitions.
The organization sent two first-round picks, a third-round selection and former starting quarterback Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions because Matthew Stafford was supposed to be everything McVay wanted in a quarterback for the Rams’ offensive scheme. Stafford was, for a time. He’s now playing with the same rollercoaster energy that marred his 12 seasons in Motown.
Within the last two weeks, general manager Les Snead traded for outside linebacker Von Miller and signed recently released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. as a free agent. Both debuted Monday. Neither provided much in their first appearance with the Rams.
All of these moves overshadowed the fact the Rams aren’t particularly tough in the trenches on either side of the ball nor built to handle bigger, more physical teams. Furthermore, Stafford gets rattled when he makes mistakes or the team gets down early.

Rams HC Sean McVay on upset loss to 49ers: ‘This was a humbling night’
Though the game was in Santa Clara, California, it certainly had the feel of a Hollywood premiere.
Under the Monday night lights and upon the prime-time stage, Odell Beckham and Von Miller made their Los Angeles Rams debuts.
However, as the Rams were ready to roll out the red carpet, the underdog San Francisco 49ers were hardly ready to roll over and showed it with a physical, run-based attack from the start that led them to a 31-10 upset.
“This was a humbling night for us,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said.
All in on their Super Bowl aspirations, the Rams (7-3) are sitting in second place in the NFC West after losing to the rival 49ers (4-5) for the fifth straight time.
Not only was it an upset loss, but it was one in which the 49ers grounded and pounded their way to victory, running the ball 44 times for 156 yards. They were more often than not the more physical team on each side of the ball and it showed from the onset, when San Francisco took over after a Jimmie Ward interception and proceeded to run it right down the Rams’ throats for a 7-0 lead it would never relinquish.
It was an 18-play, 93-yard odyssey of an opening drive for the 49ers that took 11 minutes, 3 seconds of game clock and perhaps took something more from the Rams.
“It’s the way we want to do it,” said 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who ended the opening march with an 8-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle. “I don’t want to say it took their soul away, but it definitely did something.”
Rams have ‘humbling’ night vs. 49ers after going ‘all-in’
The Los Angeles Rams publicly proclaimed themselves as “all-in” after acquiring Von Miller just before the trade deadline and then followed that up by signing Odell Beckham Jr.
Those two high-profile stars didn’t help them reverse their fortunes against the division-rival San Francisco 49ers and now the once high-flying Rams head into their bye week searching for answers following their worst two-game stretch in five seasons under coach Sean McVay.
Two early interceptions by Matthew Stafford put Los Angeles in a big hole and then dropped passes and a defense that got overpowered by San Francisco did the rest in a 31-10 loss to the 49ers on Monday night.
“This was a humbling night for us as a team, and a great opportunity for us to be able to take a deep breath, step away, look at the things that we need to correct, particularly offensively over the last couple of weeks,” coach Sean McVay said. “We’re going to figure this thing out and we’re going to come back … swinging, I promise you that, these last seven games of the regular season.”
