Stranger Things 4’ Spoilers Review
Endless slow-motion can’t hide Season 4’s overextended story, but there are a few encouraging points to remember as “Stranger Things” drags to a close.
Early in the supersized finale of “Stranger Things 4” — or what would be roughly one-quarter of the way through a standard TV episode, but what’s less than one-tenth into the 140-minute “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback” — a stoner doofus stumbles into a two-pronged revelation. For plot purposes, Argyle (Eduardo Franco) thinks of the perfect place for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to conduct her “mind fight.”
His place of employment, Surfer Boy Pizza, not only carries the necessary amount of salt to better focus our hero’s powers, but it’s also got a bathtub-size container to help her travel into her friend’s mind. (Writing all this at once, it suddenly makes perfect sense that a constantly high teenager would know just how to handle such a situation.)
But the more pertinent realization may belong to the audience. In case it wasn’t clear where “Stranger Things” Season 4 would stage its climactic battle, the term “mind fight” leaves no doubt.
Eleven and One (aka Vecna, aka Henry Creel, played by Jamie Campbell Bower) will square off in the same arena so much of Season 4 was set in: the human mind. And despite Argyle’s enthusiasm for the plan, the more fitting phrase isn’t “The mind fight is on,” but “Aw, that’s a bummer, man.”
Stranger Things is an American science fiction horror drama television series created by the Duffer Brothers that is streaming on Netflix.
The brothers serve as showrunners and are executive producers along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The first season of the series was released on Netflix on July 15, 2016, with the second, third, and fourth seasons following in October 2017, July 2019, and May and July 2022, respectively. On February 2022, the series was renewed for a fifth and final season.
Set in the 1980s primarily in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, the series centers around numerous supernatural events occurring around the town, specifically around their connection to a hostile alternate reality called the “Upside Down”, after a link between it and Earth is made by a government child experimentation facility.
The series stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Cara Buono, Matthew Modine, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, and Brett Gelman.
The Duffer Brothers developed Stranger Things as a mix of investigative drama and supernatural elements portrayed with horror, science fiction and childlike sensibilities.
Setting the series in the 1980s, the Duffer Brothers infused references to the pop culture of that decade while themes and directorial aspects were inspired by the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Stephen King, Wes Craven and H. P. Lovecraft. They also took inspiration from experiments conducted during the Cold War and real-world conspiracy theories involving secret government experiments.
Stranger Things has attracted record viewership on Netflix, and was praised by critics for its characterization, atmosphere, acting, soundtrack, directing, writing, and homages to 1980s films. Critics regard Stranger Things as one of Netflix’s flagship series, with it having achieved a dedicated fanbase and being credited with launching the careers of many of its younger cast members.
Stranger Things has received many awards and nominations, including nominations from the Golden Globe Awards, British Academy Television Awards, Directors Guild of America Awards, Writers Guild of America Awards, and Grammy Awards, as well as wins from the Primetime Emmy Awards, Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, American Film Institute, Critics’ Choice Television Awards, and People’s Choice Awards.
In an open letter to Stranger Things fans via The Hollywood Reporter, the creators behind the series, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed that Season Five would be its last.
The final episode of Stranger Things’ fourth season turned the whole world of the show upside-down, literally: the Upside Down has officially come to Hawkins. Although Netflix is planning on making spinoffs, the series will come to an end with the upcoming fifth and final season.
Those deaths were three: Martin Brenner (Mathew Modine), killed by a sniper; Jason Carver (Mason Dye), ripped in half by an Earth fissure; and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), eaten alive by Vecna’s hell bats after playing the most metal of metal concerts.
There were three years in between the release of seasons 3 and 4, but the pandemic contributed to scheduling and production delays. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait that long for season 5, but it’s still likely that we won’t see the final installment of Stranger Things until 2023 or 2024.
Season 4 isn’t just the first to get a two-part release, it’s also the longest by far with nine episodes that are all over an hour long. In fact, the shortest episode of the new season is longer than all but one of the series’ previous episodes!
