Microsoft Predicts Release of PS5 Slim Model Later This Year.
Microsoft has filed documents as part of the FTC v. Microsoft hearing that reveal the software giant thinks a PS5 Slim model is on the way later this year, and that it might be priced at $399.99. The document states, “PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.” If Microsoft’s information is accurate, it wouldn’t be the first time that secrets have been leaked in the FTC v. Microsoft case.
It was reported last year that Sony was preparing for a PS5 with a detachable disc drive for September 2023. The console is rumored to be sold on its own without the disc drive or in a bundle, which suggests Sony could be considering making the slimmer version of the PS5 the default. Currently, there is no option to connect an optional drive to the $399 PS5 Digital Edition or the $499 PS5 with a disc drive.
Microsoft’s document also mentions that “Sony is also anticipated to release a handheld version of PlayStation 5 later this year for under $300,” which is not entirely accurate. Sony is actually planning a handheld device that can run PS5 games by streaming them over Wi-Fi from a PS5 console. It’s worth noting that Microsoft doesn’t cite any third-party sources for the PS5 slim timing or pricing in its findings of fact and conclusion of law document.

While the information regarding a PS5 Slim hardware revision isn’t surprising, considering Sony has released slimmed-down revisions of its consoles in the past, it’s exciting news for gamers who may be looking for a more affordable option. It’s likely that the Japanese company will reveal the design and any features that set it apart from currently available models soon, given the rumored release date of later this year.
Rumors suggest that the PS5 Slim model will be compatible with a detachable disc drive, which unfortunately won’t be compatible with current models. It’s an interesting time for new hardware releases, as Sony is also reportedly working on a new Remote Play-focused handheld, Project Q, which is expected to release before the end of the year. Fans of the PlayStation franchise can look forward to some exciting new hardware options in the coming months.
