Apple has revealed its newest gadget, the Vision Pro headset, a mixed-reality headset that the company calls “the most advanced personal electronics device ever”. The headset was revealed during the company’s annual WWDC keynote event in which they went into the Apple Vision Pro’s price and features.
What is Apple’s new mixed-reality headset? How much does Vision Pro cost?
Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to make a surprise announcement, revealing the company’s groundbreaking product, The Vision Pro. Cook declared that the product would bring “spatial computing” to Apple’s customers. Although the keynote primarily highlighted the Vision Pro’s augmented reality features, the headset can effortlessly transition to virtual reality using the dial.
“Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release.
“Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before. With a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations. It unlocks incredible experiences for our users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”
Like all previous computing platforms announced by Apple, the Vision Pro will utilize VisionOS, the first operating system specifically created for spatial computing. VisionOS differs from Apple’s other operating systems, such as iOS and MacOS. It presents a three-dimensional user interface that liberates applications from the confines of a traditional display.
Apple Vision Pro – WWDC 2023 Reveal
Apple emphasizes that the Vision Pro headset offers enhanced productivity, access to favorite apps, and new multitasking possibilities for users who choose to adopt it. The company’s marketing suggests that the headset will directly compete with the Meta Quest Pro. Rather than focusing primarily on gaming like the Quest 2 and the recently announced Quest 3.
The Vision Pro headset has two of Apple’s in-house chips: the M2 chip, previously announced at WWDC 2022, and the R1 chip. The R1 chip’s purpose is to process input from the headset’s 12 cameras, five sensors, and six microphones, ensuring real-time content delivery to users. According to Apple, the R1 chip can stream new images to the Vision Pro’s displays within a remarkable 12 milliseconds.
In terms of battery life, Apple has designed the Vision Pro to be suitable for all-day use when connected to a power source. It can provide “up to two hours of use” with the external battery, as depicted in the accompanying image.
