Peter Molyneux is a legendary game designer and the creator of the original Fable trilogy, a series of fantasy role-playing games that combined humor, choice and consequence, and a dynamic world. Molyneux left Lionhead Studios, the developer of the Fable games, in 2012 and founded his own studio, 22cans. Since then, he has been working on various projects, such as Godus, The Trail, and an upcoming game that he claims has a mechanic that has never been seen before in a game.

Meanwhile, the Fable franchise has been dormant for several years, after the cancellation of Fable Legends and the closure of Lionhead Studios in 2016. However, in 2020, Microsoft announced that a new Fable game was in development by Playground Games, the studio behind the Forza Horizon series. The announcement was accompanied by a teaser trailer that showed a fairy being eaten by a frog in a lush forest.
Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for more news and gameplay footage of the Fable reboot, which is expected to launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Their wish was partially granted at the Xbox Summer Showcase in July 2023, where Playground Games revealed a new in-engine trailer that gave a glimpse of the game’s world, characters, and humor. The trailer featured the voice of Richard Ayoade, a British comedian and actor, who played a giant who was obsessed with vegetables and annoyed by the hero’s antics.
The trailer received mostly positive reactions from fans and critics, who praised its visuals, tone, and charm. However, some also expressed disappointment at the lack of actual gameplay footage, as most of the scenes seemed to be scripted or cinematic rather than representative of how the game would play. One of these critics was none other than Peter Molyneux himself, who shared his thoughts on the trailer in an interview with GameReactor during Gamelab Barcelona.
Molyneux said that he was impressed by the trailer’s quality and style, and that it captured the same “ridiculous energy” as the original trilogy. He also complimented Ayoade’s performance and said that he was a “perfect choice” for the game. However, he also admitted that he would have loved to see more gameplay, and that he was curious about how the game would handle choice and consequence, one of the core features of the Fable series. He said:
“Like you, I would have loved to see more gameplay, but I really loved when the fireball was thrown from the heroine. I loved the feeling of impact it gave. I thought that showed real promise. So yes, my expectations are high.”
Molyneux also revealed that he had not been contacted by Playground Games or Microsoft about the Fable reboot, and that he had no involvement or influence on the project. He said that he respected their decision and wished them all the best. He also said that he was happy to see Fable return to the spotlight after so many years.
“I think it’s fantastic that they’re bringing back Fable. I think it’s such an important franchise for Xbox and for Microsoft. And I think anything that brings more attention to Fable is great.”
Molyneux’s reaction to the Fable reboot is understandable, considering his history and passion for the series. He is known for being very enthusiastic and ambitious about his games, often making bold promises and statements that sometimes do not match the final product. He has also been criticized for overhyping his games and disappointing his fans with unfulfilled expectations.
However, Molyneux is also a visionary and an innovator who has contributed greatly to the gaming industry. He has created some of the most influential and memorable games of all time, such as Populous, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, and of course, Fable. He has also inspired many other game developers and designers with his ideas and creativity.
Therefore, it is interesting to hear his opinion on the Fable reboot, which is being made by a different studio with a different vision. It is clear that he still cares about the series and its fans, and that he hopes that Playground Games will deliver a worthy successor to his legacy.
Whether or not they will succeed remains to be seen, as we still know very little about the game’s gameplay mechanics, story, features, and release date. However, based on what we have seen so far, it seems that they are on the right track to create a new Fable game that will honor its roots while also bringing something fresh and exciting to the table.
We will have to wait until we see more gameplay footage and hear more details from Playground Games before we can judge the game more accurately. Until then, we can only hope that the Fable reboot will live up to its name and become a new legend in the gaming world.
