“If you listen carefully enough, the past whispers to you…” The new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which landed Monday, reveals Mads Mikkelsen as wizarding villain Grindelwald. Mikkelsen takes over from troubled Johnny Depp for this prequel to J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories.

Katherine Waterston, Jude Law, Ezra Miller and Eddie Redmayne also star. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore magics its way into theaters April 15.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a 2016 fantasy film directed by David Yates.

A joint British and American production, it is a spin-off of and prequel to the Harry Potter film series. It was produced and written by J. K. Rowling in her screenwriting debut, inspired by her 2001 “guide book” of the same name. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Johnny Depp, Ron Perlman, and Colin Farrell. It is the first instalment in the Fantastic Beasts film series, and ninth overall in the Wizarding World franchise that began with the Harry Potter films.

The next Harry Potter movie is coming sooner than we thought. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be released in theaters on April 15, 2022, rather than July, Warner Bros. announced on Wednesday.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be written by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates, just like the other two movies in the series. The series will also continue to star Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander and will likely bring back Jude Law, as a young Albus Dumbledore.

The Secrets of Dumbledore — an almost impossibly over-the-top subtitle, even by Harry Potter standards — will be the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series. For those who might not remember, the second movie (The Crimes of Grindelwald) ended very precariously with a massive reveal that Credence Barebone, who is now working with Grindelwald, is actually Albus Dumbledore’s long-lost brother, Aurelius.

Now, does this technically invalidate most of Dumbledore’s storyline in the original series? Yes. But who cares, no one made you watch these movies.

Anyway, this cliffhanger leaves us with a few possibilities for the Secrets of Dumbledore title. On the one hand, it could mean that Albus Dumbledore knew he had a secret brother. It could also mean that Aurelius is the secret of the Dumbledore family and Albus had no idea. Or maybe, it could also mean that Aurelius’ secret is that he isn’t really a Dumbledore — thus keeping the original Harry Potter canon mostly intact.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

For most of the series, he is the headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts. As part of his backstory, it is revealed that he is the founder and leader of the Order of the Phoenix, an organisation dedicated to fighting Lord Voldemort, the main antagonist of the series.

Albus Dumbledore was never proud or vain; he could find something to value in anyone, however apparently insignificant or wretched, and I believe that his early losses endowed him with great humanity and sympathy.

I shall miss his friendship more than I can say, but my loss is as nothing compared to the Wizarding world’s. That he was the most inspiring and the best loved of all Hogwarts headmasters cannot be in question. He died as he lived: working always for the greater good and, to his last hour, as willing to stretch out a hand to a small boy with dragon pox as he was on the day that I met him.
