Who is Ariana DeBose
Ariana DeBose is an American actress, singer, and dancer.
Ariana DeBose was born on January 25, 1991 in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA as Ariana Nicole DeBose. She is an actress and director, known for West Side Story (2021), Hamilton (2020) and The Prom (2020).
She is the recipient of multiple accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, and nominations for an Academy Award, a Tony Award, two BAFTA Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.
DeBose made her television debut competing on So You Think You Can Dance. She then made her Broadway debut in the musical Bring It On: The Musical in 2011 and appeared in further Broadway roles in Motown: The Musical in 2013 and Pippin in 2014. She also appeared in the original cast of Hamilton from 2015 to 2016 and as Jane in A Bronx Tale from 2016 to 2017. In 2018, she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Donna Summer in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.
DeBose also appeared in the taped version of Hamilton, which was released in 2020 on Disney+. She played Alyssa Greene in Netflix’s The Prom (2020) and Emma in the Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon! (2021).
In 2021, her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s musical film West Side Story (2021), a reboot of the 1961 film of the same name and inspired by the 1957 play of the same name, earned her worldwide recognition and several accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, and nominations for two British Academy Film Awards, two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Nominations are in for the 94th Annual Academy Awards, and Broadway favorites are among this year’s nominees.
Ariana DeBose is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Anita in West Side Story, capping off a successful awards season that has already seen the Bronx Tale and Summer star win a Golden Globe and receive nominations for BAFTA, SAG, Critics’ Choice, and NAACP Image Awards, among others. DeBose’s nomination follows Rita Moreno’s historic 1961 Oscar win playing the same role in the earlier film adaptation of the Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents musical.
Nominated alongside DeBose is stage and screen star (and Tony nominee) Dame Judi Dench, for her performance in Belfast.
Tony-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell received a nomination for his West Side Story costumes. Tazewell won a 2016 Tony Award for Hamilton, and an Emmy Award for The Wiz Live the same year.

She appeared in the Tony Winning revival of Pippin as a Leading Player, directed by Diane Paulus. In the 2013 Broadway season she originated the role of Mary Wilson of the Supremes (Diana Ross cover) in “Motown the Musical” & Nautica in Andy Blankenbuhler’s “Bring It On the Musical.”
She was honored to appear on the 2013 Tony Awards telecast with both casts! Other credits include: Top 20 finalist on Season 6 of the FOX hit So You Think You Can Dance; OLTL Star Crossed Lovers Series.”
She made her New York debut in Steven Sondhiem’s “COMPANY” with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Paul Gemigani, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Martha Plimpton of Raising Hope, Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, Stephen Colbert, and the great Patti LuPone. The show played in movie theatres across America in June 2011 & is now available for purchase on DVD.
Ariana received her original dance training at CC & Co. Dance Complex in Raleigh, NC and has worked with numerous choreographers all over from New York to Los Angeles.
Some of these include: Sonya Tayeh, Mandy Moore, Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo, Tyce Diorio, Nick Lazarini, Wade Robeson, Martha Nichols of So You Think You Can Dance, Jason Parsons, Lauren Adams, Wes Veldink, Josh Bergasse, Joe Lanteri, and Elizabeth Parkinson.
She has also worked extensively with the faculty of the Triple Arts Broadway Series- including Christopher Damboise, Kelly Crandall-Damboise, Terrence Mann and Charlotte Damboise.
Ariana is an award winning choreographer and has choreographed for dance companies, studios, dance teams, color-guards and most recently the Carolina Crown Drum Corps International.
Ariana DeBose is an ensemble member of the Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton and had been with the cast since the Off-Broadway Production. She plays the Bullet, which represents death. She stayed with the cast until July 9th, 2016 departing at the same time as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr.

“Hamilfans” know her as “The Bullet,” a personification of death that shadows Alexander Hamilton throughout the show and surfaces at key moments. “The Bullet” is the first character to die on stage, as a spy outed by a British soldier.
