Armando Iannucci has reacted to the parallels between Veep and the circumstances surrounding Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the US presidential race

Veep creator Armando Iannucci reacts to ‘eerie’ comparisons with Joe Biden exit from presidential race

Emily Maitlis was one of several fans of the political satire series to remark on the similarities

Biden, 81, bowed out from the 2024 US presidential race amid growing pressure and concerns surrounding his age and health.

In his statement announcing the news, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, with the former US senator emerging as one of the frontrunners to run against Donald Trump.

Several people have since noted similarities between these real-life events and Iannucci’s political satire series Veep, in which Seinfeld’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Selina Meyer, vice president of the United States.

Following news of Biden’s exit from the race and his subsequent endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, a clip from Veep went viral on social media in which Selina is seen telling her shocked team that she is running for president.

Kamala Harris

As Kamala Harris prepares to, possibily, become the next Democratic nominee for president, after Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he won’t run again, the comparison to those days couldn’t feel more stark: What a difference 10 years makes.

There seems no real need for a dramatization of political chaos, since no one could have scripted the past three-and-a-half weeks of American life. This isn’t meant to minimize what will be the very real consequences of the November election, whichever way it goes, or, to cite just one of the many shocking events of this summer, the potentially life-and-death consequences of the attack on Donald Trump’s life.
