Suni Lee wins bronze in uneven bars

Lee edged out the rest of the competition to take bronze on the uneven bars for the second-straight Olympics

Lee successfully defended her bronze from Tokyo in Sunday’s apparatus final.

Suni Lee held down the fort as the only American in Sunday’s uneven bars final, earning a bronze and successfully defending her podium finish in Tokyo.

After Simone Biles and “Pommel Horse Guy” Stephen Nedoroscik collected more hardware for Team USA in the first day of gymnastics apparatus finals, Suni Lee added to the U.S. medal haul with a bronze on the uneven bars.

Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour took gold with an absolutely massive score of 15.700 off of a beautiful and near-perfect routine. Qiu Qiyuan from China earned silver, scoring a 15.500 — a significant boost from her score of 15.066 in qualifying.

Lee earned bronze in the event for the second Olympics in a row, competing last and posting a score of 14.800 to edge out the rest of the competition for third.

Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour fulfilled her long-awaited destiny by winning gold. Qiu Qiyuan of China took silver.

Lee had the advantage of going last, which gave her the opportunity to perform the most strategic routine possible. Lee earned a 14.800 with a slightly more conservative routine.

She never thought to dream of winning all-around Olympic gold in Tokyo with Simone Biles in the mix, but a bars medal was always on the agenda there.

Simone Biles, who won gold in the vault final Saturday, returns to the competition floor on Monday with the balance beam and floor exercise finals.
